No. 10 CSUN Falls in Five Sets at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - One night after coming back to defeat No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne in five sets,10th-ranked CSUN came up short in another five-setter Saturday as No. 14 Ball State knocked off the Matadors in a non-conference match at Worthen Arena.
The 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12 win by the Cardinals (3-4)Â snaps CSUN's three-match winning streak as the Matadors slip to 5-2 on the season.
KEY STATISTICS
• Senior Dimitar Kalchev tied for match-high honors with 16 kills, hitting an impressive .400 on 25 attacks. Kalchev also had two of CSUN's four aces along with four digs.
• Sophomore Maciej Ptaszynski added 11 kills (.350) and three digs while redshirt freshman Daniel Wetter chipped in 10 kills (421) four blocks and a pair of digs.
• Taylor Ittner posted 47 assists and five digs while Matador libero Emmett Enriques recorded a match-high 11 digs.
• The Matadors out-hit the Cardinals .324 to .299 and had a 59-56 advantage in kills. Ball State had a sizable advantage in blocking, posting 16.5 team blocks to 8.5 for CSUN.Â
• The Cardinals' Kaleb Jenness matched Kalchev with 16 kills (.355) to pace Ball State.
SET 1
The Matadors won the first four points of the match and led 8-2 when the hosts called an early timeout. Another Ball State attack error gave CSUN its largest lead (12-5) before a 6-2 run trimmed the lead to 14-11. But an ensuing block by Wetter and Ksawery Tomsia fueled the Matadors on a 5-2 run which pushed the CSUN lead back to 19-13. After cutting the Matador lead to two on a pair of occasions, the Cardinals eventually pulled within one at 22-21, when CSUN rallied for the final three points in the 25-21 win.
SET 2
With the score knotted at 9-9, Ball State scored four straight points to open up a 13-9 lead. Following a timeout, the Matadors put together a 5-3 run to pull within 16-14 following a Wetter kill. But the hosts responded with a 3-0 run to extend the lead to five (19-14) before a pair of kills from Tomsia, a kill from Kalchev and a pair of Cardinal hitting errors were part of a 5-2 CSUN run that pulled the Matadors within two at 21-19. But Ball State closed the set on a 4-1 run to even the match with the 25-20 win. Â
SET 3
CSUN nearly overcame an early 9-5 deficit after another Tomsia-Wetter block cut the hosts lead to 10-9. Out of a timeout, Ball State quickly built its lead back to four at 15-11. Still trailing 19-16, the Matadors rallied for a 3-1 run, capped by a Ryan DeWeese ace, to pull within 20-19. The teams then traded sideouts until a late two-point run by the Matadors pulled CSUN even at 23-23. But consecutive kills by Ball State sent the Cardinals to the 25-23 win and the 2-1 lead.Â
SET 4
The two teams battled to a 14-14 tie when CSUN took advantage of a pair of Cardinal miscues along with an Ittner/Paul Rzepniewski block to take a 17-14 lead. The Matadors maintained a 19-16 lead when Ptaszynski scored on a pair of kills to go with one from DeWeese as CSUN opened up a 22-16 cushion. Leading 24-19, the Matadors saw the hosts save a pair of set points before Wetter slammed a kill off the Cardinal block to force a fifth and deciding set.

Neither team led by more than one until a 3-0 Ball State run snapped a 7-7 tie. A kill from DeWeese followed by a solo block from Wetter pulled CSUN within 10-9. The Matadors also trailed by one at 12-11 and 13-12 but the Cardinals tallied the final two points to seal the five-set win.

The Matadors return to Northridge next week to open two-match homestand Friday, Jan, 25 against No. 7 Loyola-Chicago at 7 p.m.
