1/25/2019 9:32:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Ksawery Tomsia and Dimitar Kalchev combined for 25 kills but the 11th-ranked CSUN Matadors fell in straight sets to No. 5 Loyola-Chicago in a non-conference match Friday night at The Matadome.
The 34-32, 25-19, 25-21 loss, CSUN's first in three sets this season, drops to the Matadors to 5-3 on the season while the Ramblers improve to 6-1.

• Redshirt freshman Daniel Wetter chipped in six kills on 10 errorless attacks while sophomore Maciej Ptaszynski had five kills, struggling to a -.056 hitting clip, but did tie for team-high honors in digs (6) and blocks (4).

• CSUN hit .245 (41-16-102) as a team but had trouble slowing down the Ramblers who hit .387 (49-13-93).
• Luke Denton led all hitters in the match with 15 kills (.524) to pace Loyola.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Loyola played great tonight; they served consistently well and gave us problems. We didn't play terrible, they were just the better team tonight. We'll watch the video and see what adjustments we can make and get ready for Lewis tomorrow night."
SET 1
In a set that featured 26 ties and eight lead changes, neither team led by more than two points until a Rambler service ace gave Loyola a 15-12 lead. But an ensuing service error by the visitors propelled the Matadors on 5-1 run the put the hosts in front 17-16. Two quick points out of a Loyola timeout gave the Ramblers an 18-17 lead and the two teams traded sideouts until 23-23. A Rambler kill gave Loyola its first set point and CSUN would save four more set points before kills from Wetter and Tomsia set the Matadors up with set point at 28-27
Tomsia served out following a Loyola timeout but CSUN still had swings at the set at 29-28 and 30-29. But the Ramblers answered each time before regaining a 31-30 forcing a Matador timeout. After Kalchev's kill saved yet another set point, the visitors rallied for three of the final four points to take a 34-32 win.
SET 2
The Matadors, who were out-hit in the set .484 to .250, jumped out to a 3-0 lead and still led by three at 12-9 when a Loyola hitting error extended the lead to four. After the Ramblers called timeout, Loyola rolled off a 5-2 run to knot the score at 14-14 but the Matadors took three of the next five points to stay in front 17-16. A 3-0 Loyola run forced a CSUN timeout before the Ramblers extended the run to 9-2 which erased all doubt in the 25-19 win.Â
SET 3
Another tight set resulted in neither team holding more than a two-point cushion until the Ramblers went ahead 21-18 following a Collin Mahan ace. Kalchev's final kill of the night kept the Matadors within two (21-19) and CSUN was still within two at 22-20 when the Matadors surrendered three of the final four points in the match.Â
