NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior Ksawery Tomsia pounded a career-high 24 kills but it wasn't enough as the No. 9 Lewis Flyers held off No. 11 CSUN in five sets in a non-conference match Saturday night at The Matadome.
With the 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12 win, Lewis improves to 6-3 on the season while the Matadors drop their third straight and slip to 5-4.

COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Tonight showed us what we need to work on as the season goes along. Our passing broke down so we need to work on that. For the most part, I thought our serving was pretty good but when it's that close in set five it comes down to one or two plays. I thought we played well in set one and set four but in sets two and three our setting broke down and our passing broke down. They really affected us in a way that affected our attacking."
SET 1
The Matadors jumped out to a 7-3 lead behind consecutive aces from Kalchev before extending the lead to 16-10 forcing Lewis into its second and final timeout. A 5-1 run by the Flyers trimmed the lead to 17-15 but the Matadors held on late to win 25-22. Tomsia put down 10 kills on his first 10 swings of the night before finishing the set at .833.
SET 2
Behind Ptaszynski's serving, the Matadors jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Lewis battled back to within 7-6 but neither team could get much separation as they played to a 13-13 tie. After two straight Flyer points, CSUN tallied three straight for a 16-15 lead. Six more ties ensued, the final one at 22-22, when the visitors scored two straight to set up set point at 24-22. A Ptaszynski kill saved one set point before a Connor Pallman kill ended the set 25-23.Â
SET 3
CSUN led 7-4 early on following a Ptaszynski kill but a 6-1 run forced a Matador timeout at 10-8. The set went back-and-forth until 14-14 when the Flyers engineered a 6-2 run to open up a 20-16 cushion. A Tomsia kill kept the Matadors within three at 20-17 and CSUN was still within three at 21-18 when Lewis closed the set on a 4-1 run to take a 25-19 win.   Â
SET 4
Kills from Ptaszynski and Tomsia opened up an early 9-5 lead for the Matadors and opened up a 17-10 cushion on Tomsia's 24th kill of the night. CSUN was still up by seven (21-14) when the Flyers scored three straight to force a Matador timeout. But another Ptaszynski kill snapped the run as CSUN led 22-17 before closing the set 25-21 on a Kalchev put-away.
SET 5
CSUN scored the first two points in the fifth and after Lewis came back to take a 4-3 lead, the Matadors scored three straight for a 6-4 lead. Following a Tomsia service error, a kill by Ptaszynski followed by a Flyer hitting error put CSUN up 8-5. Lewis called timeout before claiming three of the next four points to close to 9-8. A Kalchev kill maintained an 11-10 Matador lead before the visitors struck for three kills and an ace to take the lead for good at 14-11.Â
