NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN Women's Volleyball team battled back from a two-set deficit but couldn't complete the comeback as Long Beach State held on for the 3-2 win in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.

SET 1
The hosts jumped out to a 5-2 lead before a kill from Nevarez and a pair from Waggoner evened the score. CSUN extended the run to 5-0 and led 7-5 before opening up a 10-7 cushion following a Salone kill. The Matadors would lead by as many as four at both 12-8 and 14-10 when the Beach rallied behind a 5-1 run to knot the score at 15-15. Another Salone kill fueled a 4-1 Matador run that put CSUN in front 19-16. But the hosts countered with a 4-1 run of their own to forge a 20-20 tie. The Matadors then scored two straight which was quickly countered by the Beach and the score remained tied at 23-all. Xue's kill gave Long Beach set point at 24-23 when Nevarez answered with a kill saving one set point. But a kill from Amanda Henderson followed by a block on Nevarez's swing sent the Beach to the 26-24 win.Â
SET 2
Neither team could gain more than a one-point advantage until CSUN received a kill from Lexi McLeod followed by a Warnock/Waggoner block, a Waggoner kill and a Beach hitting error to open up a 9-5 lead. A Warnock kill helped CSUN maintain a four-point lead at 12-8. A Nevarez kill kept the Matadors in front 14-11 when the hosts went on a 5-0 run to take back the lead 16-14. The Beach led 20-17 when McLeod's attack went long but a Merjil ace and a pair of Long Beach miscues pulled the Matadors even at 20-20. Sideouts ensued until the two teams forged a 24-24 tie when Long Beach used a kill and another block on set point to win by the identical 26-24 score.  Â

The Matadors would not relinquish the lead and Waggoner's kill set CSUN up with three set points at 24-21. But the Beach erased all three set points before McLeod's kill gave the Matadors another chance at 25-24. Long Beach would answer again before a kill by Orshoff and a Long Beach setting error gave CSUN the 27-25 win.
