NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Despite a gritty effort and several late-set rallies, CSUN came up short in a straight-sets loss to UC Santa Barbara, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23, in a Big West match on Friday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Junior outside hitter Hailey Brockway led the Matadors (13-9, 6-5 Big West) with 13 kills and a team-high 11 digs, recording her first double-double of the season.
Senior Leah Miller added seven kills (.211) on 19 swings to go with three blocks, while Julia Bazylevych and Hayley Ogden combined for 13 more kills. Setters Katie Kolar and Jan Marie Duhaylungsod combined for 32 assists and 17 digs for the Matadors. Iye Okolo chipped in a pair of kills on five attacks to hit a team-high .400.
CSUN battled evenly with the Gauchos (16-7, 8-3) throughout, posting a .181 hitting clip while matching UCSB point-for-point in nearly every frame. The Matadors' defense kept the Gauchos' hitters in check for long stretches, tallying six total team blocks and forcing 14 UCSB attack errors.
All three sets featured back-and-forth play — the match included 14 ties and eight lead changes — but UC Santa Barbara capitalized on key late points in each frame. Brockway and Miller each delivered clutch swings to keep CSUN within reach, but UCSB's Gabi Martinez closed out each set with timely kills.
