Matadors Drop Four-Set Decision to Long Beach State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After claiming the opening set 25-21, the CSUN Women's Volleyball team saw visiting Long Beach State come back to take the final three sets as the Beach claimed a 3-1 win in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at The Matadome.
The 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 win snaps a six-match skid for Long Beach State which improves to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in the Big West. The loss, the Matadors' third straight to open the conference season, drops CSUN to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in the Big West.Â
KEY STATISTICS
• Sophomore Nicole Nevarez led CSUN with 17 kills, hitting .262 on 42 attacks. Fellow sophomore Seyvion Waggoner added 15 kills (.256) and four digs but no other Matador reached double figures in kills.
• Senior Morgan Salone chipped in eight kills on .368 hitting and fellow middle Hayden Warnock added six kills, hitting .417 on 12 swings to go with a team-high six blocks.
• Senior setter Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker notched her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 49 assists and 13 digs while libero Makayla Bradford scooped up a team-high 15 digs.
• After hitting .417 in the opening set, the Matadors hit .192 over the final three sets to hit .253 (56-18-150) on the night.
• Kashauna Williams led all hitters in the match with 19 kills (.341) to lead the Beach who hit .281 (61-18-153) as a team.
SET 1
CSUN scored the first point of the match on a Taylor Orshoff kill and the Matadors still led 4-2 following a Nevarez kill. CSUN maintained a 6-3 lead when the visitors rallied behind a 5-2 run to take an 8-7 lead. Neither team could gain more than a three-point lead until a Nevarez-Salone block opened up a 15-12 Matador lead. CSUN led by as many as four points on several occasions down the stretch, the last at 24-20, when a Beach hitting error gave the Matadors the 25-20 win.Â
SET 2
After the two teams traded sideouts until Long Beach State used an Avery Nelson kill to take a 12-11 lead. A Nevarez kill then tied the score while fueling a 7-0 CSUN run that opened up an 18-12 lead. Following a Beach timeout, Long Beach then went on a 7-0 run of its own to take back the lead 19-18. The score was tied against 19-19 and 20-20 when the visitors took advantage of five consecutive Matador miscues down the stretch to take the 25-20 decision.Â

Kills by Salone and Nevarez snapped an 11-11 tie as the Matadors opened their largest lead of the set at 13-11. Another Nevarez kill kept the lead at two (16-14) and consecutive Waggoner kills kept CSUN in front by the score of 16-14. But another 7-0 run by the Beach opened up a 21-16 lead before the Matadors scored three straight to trim the lead to 21-19. But Long Beach scored four of the final five points out of a timeout to claim another 25-20 win.Â

Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors trailed 4-2 early on before battling back to get within one at 16-15 forcing a Beach timeout. But three straight Beach points boosted the lead back to 19-15 forcing a CSUN timeout. But a 4-1 run by the Matadors, capped by a block by Makekau-Whittaker and Warnock, cut the lead to 20-19. The Long Beach lead was still one at 21-20 when the Beach scored three of the next four to take match point at 24-21. After CSUN saved one set point on Nevarez's 17th kill of the match, Williams connected for a kill on the ensuing point sending Long Beach to the 3-1 win. Â

The Matadors hit the road for their next two matches, traveling to UC Riverside on Oct. 10 and UC Davis on Oct. 13.
