NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN women's basketball hosts Portland Thursday for its second Kids Day Event before traveling to Washington for a Sunday matchup.
Â
With several local elementary and junior high schools planning on attending the game between the Matadors and the Pilots, Thursday's action will be in front of a crowd that could break the school record for the highest attendance in CSUN history. A school-record 1,218 fans saw the 2018 edition of the game in The Matadome. The noon game will be streamed on BigWest.tv with David Gascon on the call.
Â
The Pilots are off to their first 4-0 start since 2010 as Portland defeated Fresno State 75-64 last Sunday in Portland. Under first-year head coach Michael Meek, the Pilots have four players averaging in double-figures led by Alex Fowler who is scoring 15.5 points per game. Fowler also leads the team in rebounding at 9.3 per game. This is the 11th time that CSUN and Portland are playing women's basketball. The series is tied 5-5. The Matadors have won three in a row including the last time the teams played in 2015 (68-62).Â
Â
The CSUN-Washington State game will be streamed on Pac-12.com and is set for a noon start.
Â
Washington State is 2-0 before a Wednesday night matchup at Boise State. Borislava Hristova is 16th in Division I in scoring this week as she needs just 223 points to break Jeanne Eggart's (1977-82) program record of 1,967 points. CSUN won for the first time in four tries against the Cougars last season when the Matadors defeated Washington State 65-52 as part of the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Classic.
Â
The Matadors fell to 0-4 on the year with a pair of losses last week. Virginia defeated CSUN 72-47 last Tuesday before the Matadors dropped a 79-61 decision to the University of San Francisco last Saturday in San Francisco. Jordyn Jackson averaged 13.0 points for the week, including a career-high 20 points against USF on Saturday.
Â
De'Jionae Calloway averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last week while Lauren Shymkewicz averaged 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks for the week. Shymkewicz reset her career-high with 14 points against San Francisco, tied her career-high with nine rebounds against the Dons, and reset her career-high with four blocks against USF.
