Matadors Drop Season-Finale at No. 18 Hawai'i

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The CSUN Women's Volleyball team dropped its 2019 season finale as No. 18 Hawai'i swept the Matadors in a Big West Conference match Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
With the 25-18, 25-12, 25-14 win, the Rainbow Wahine improve to 23-3 overall and claim a share of the conference title at 13-2 in the Big West. The Matadors conclude the season with an overall record of 12-16 and a Big West record of 7-9.
KEY STATISTICS
• Sophomore Nicole Nevarez led CSUN with 11 kills (.121) while also posting four digs. Fellow sophomores Seyvion Waggoner and Lexi McLeod each chipped in seven kills with McLeod hitting a team-high .375 on 18 attacks.
• In her final collegiate match, senior setter Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker had 17 assists giving her 1,160 assists in her Matador career. Hannah Merjil added 11 assists as the Matadors wound up hitting .105 (31-20-105) as a team. Libero Makayla Bradford scooped up a team-high 11 digs in the loss.
• McKenna Ross led Hawai'i with 11 kills, hitting .429 on 21 swings. The Rainbow Wahine connected at a .398 clip (45-8-93) as a team.
SET 1
Hawai'i led by four early on (6-2) before extending the lead to six at 10-4 which forced the first Matador timeout. Trailing by as many as seven (18-11), CSUN rallied behind a 3-0 run to pull within 18-14 on a UH hitting error. But the hosts put together a 3-0 run of their own to again lead by seven at 21-14. A McLeod kill snapped the run before the 'Bows pushed the lead to eight at 23-15. Down 24-16, the Matadors saved a pair of set points on kills from Nevarez and Waggoner before the Rainbow Wahine closed the set with a kill, winning by the score of 25-18.
SET 2
The Matadors surrendered seven of the first eight points of set two and played catch-up from that point on. Hawai'I pushed the lead to eight (10-2) before eventually leading by 10 (15-5) when Nevarez's attack went long. The Rainbow Wahine lead was double digits the rest of the way as Hawai'i opened up a two-set lead with the 25-12 win.
SET 3
After the two teams traded the first four points, Hawai'i claimed six of the next seven points to open up an 8-3 lead. A Rainbow Wahine miscue followed by a Salone solo block cut the deficit to 8-5. The Matadors were within four at 12-8 when the Rainbow Wahine outscored CSUN 7-3 over the next 10 points to open up their largest lead at 19-11. Nevarez connected for a pair of kills down the stretch, including the Matadors' final point of the night (23-14) before the hosts closed out the 25-14 win.
