GREEN BAY, Wis.---CSUN Men's Basketball held a one-point lead late but Colgate finished the game on a 9-0 run to pull off a 64-56 win on Sunday at the Roman Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper. Five Matadors scored in double figures led by junior Terrell Gomez with 12 points to go with six rebounds. The quartet of junior Lance Coleman II and sophomores Michael Ou, Darius Brown II and Elijah Harkless all had 10 points.
Â
The Matadors (0-6) outshot the Raiders on the day, shooting 43.9 percent from the field while Colgate topped out at 33.8 percent. The Raiders also made 12-of-44 from 3-point range (27.3 percent) while CSUN made 2-of-15 (13.3 percent). Colgate out-rebounded CSUN 40-35. The Matadors' bench outscored Colgate's 22-12.
Â
FIRST HALF
In a half where neither side lit up the scoreboard, the Matadors started the game going 1-of-11 from the field while Colgate went 1-of-10 after the first six minutes. The Raiders would find some offense from 3-point range, hitting three treys out of the first media timeout to lead 13-4 at the 11:48 mark.
Â
The Matadors trailed by six (15-9) with under eight minutes to play before locking down the Raiders for over three minutes on the defensive end. Meanwhile, CSUN's offense got on track with an 11-0 run to suddenly lead 20-15, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Coleman II and a dunk from Jared Pearre. After a mid-range jumper from Brown II, Colgate picked up a late layup from Tucker Richardson to cut CSUN's lead to 22-20 at halftime. The Matadors shot 32.1 percent in the half while they limited the Raiders to just 22.6 percent shooting.
SECOND HALF
Jordan Burns scored the first five points of the second half to put the Raiders ahead 25-22. The Matadors would fall behind 31-26 before Coleman II got the CSUN offense going with back-to-back jumpers. Gomez brought the Matadors even at 34-34 with a layup with 13:22 to play. The junior continued to lead the way offensively with another drive to the hoop, putting CSUN in front by one before back-to-back Colgate 3-pointers gave the Raiders a 51-46 lead.
After buckets from Gomez and Brown II, Harkless made a second-chance runner to hand CSUN a 52-51 lead. Gomez would make back-to-back mid-range jumpers to keep the Matadors in the game and ahead, 56-55 with 2:44 on the clock. However, out of a timeout, Rapolas Ivanauskas drilled a 3-pointer to give the Raiders the lead right back before Gomez missed a trey on the other end. Colgate received another timely 3-pointer, this time from Nelly Cummings, that stretched the lead to five. CSUN looked for late answers from Coleman II and Gomez but could not come away with critical 3-point looks. Ivanauskas sealed the win for Colgate with late free throws, capping a 9-0 run to end the game.
