Matadors' Rally Falls Short Against North Dakota State
12/11/2019 9:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (2-9) nearly erased a 13-point second-half deficit but North Dakota State held off the Matadors for a 71-62 win on Wednesday at The Matadome. Junior Terrell Gomez and sophomore Darius Brown II scored a team-high 16 points apiece while junior Lance Coleman II added 12 points. Sophomore Elijah Harkless notched his first career double-double, tallying a personal-high 13 rebounds with 11 points.
The Bison finished with a 45.6 shooting percentage from the field while making a healthy 12-for-30 from beyond the 3-point arc (40 percent). CSUN shot 41.4 percent from the floor but struggled from 3-point range, making 5-for-20 (25.0 percent). North Dakota State also had the edge in rebounding at 35-30. The Matadors would capitalize on 16 points off turnovers compared to the Bison with five for the night.
FIRST HALF
After an early jumper from Gomez that gave the Matadors a 2-0 lead, Tyson Ward scored the Bison's first six points while Vinnie Shahid scored back-to-back layups to help give NDSU a 13-9 lead. CSUN stayed within striking distance before Coleman II knocked down his first four shots including two from long range to push the Matadors ahead 22-20 with 6:25 to play.
However, the Matadors went on a dry spell that lasted over five minutes while the Bison responded with an 11-0 run to surge ahead 31-22. Harkless finally ended the scoring drought with a driving layup before a Matador defensive stop led to another Harkless basket. With the lead trimmed to five, Shahid nailed a late 3-pointer to hand the Bison a 34-26 advantage at intermission.
SECOND HALF
Early in the half, Brown II converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play before Shahid and Tyree Eady made consecutive 3-pointers to extend the lead to its biggest at 42-29. After a timeout, the Matadors got back on track as eight-straight CSUN points quickly cut the deficit to 42-37. Shaking off a tough shooting first half, Gomez made his first 3-pointer at the 14:41 mark of the second half to make it a five-point game. Jared Samuelson drained a 3-pointer to give the Bison some breathing room but Festus Ndumanya scored the Matadors' next four points. Gomez brought the Matadors even closer with a mid-range jumper to cut the Bison lead to 45-43 with 10:37 to go.
The lead would shrink to as little at one (47-46) after a Gomez 3-pointer but the Bison had an answer. Cameron Hunter ended a three-minute dry spell for the Bison with a drive to the hoop then Shahid knocked down a 3-pointer. On the ensuing possession, Rocky Kreuser made a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock from the corner to push the lead back to nine (55-46). The lead then stretched to double digits before Brown II scored back-to-back baskets to bring the Matadors within 61-54 with 1:59 to play. A comeback was not in the cards, however, as Kreuser made a key jumper and the Bison made six free throws in the final 1:10 to stave off a CSUN rally.
GAME NOTES
Harkless is the first Matador to record a double-double this season as he also made 5-of-8 from the floor. Ndumanya chipped in with six rebounds and four points in 20 minutes off the bench.
Gomez inched closer to breaking Josh Greene's career 3-point record (228) with two more treys on Wednesday. The junior guard now stands at 221 career 3-pointers and just eight away from breaking the record.
For North Dakota State, Shahid scored a game-high 30 points while Ward and Kreuser had 12 points apiece.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I think they played well. The most important thing is we climbed back in it then they hit the back-to-back threes. One with the shot clock winding down and [Shahid] made one out on top. Those two threes made more of a difference than anything. We've got to play a little bit tougher, a little bit smarter - I think at times we're our own worst enemy. We've got to defend better and rebound better."
