NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Senior Dimitar Kalchev pounded a match-high 14 kills while junior Ksawery Tomsia added six kills and five aces as the 12th-ranked CSUN Matadors cruised past Cal Lutheran, 3-0 in a non-conference match Friday night at The Matadome.
With the straight-set win (25-14, 25-15, 25-18), CSUN improves to 7-5 on the season while the Kingsmen drop to 4-8.

COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"We won in three which is exactly what we should have done. We haven't played a match in a week so just getting out there on the court and playing a match was important. It didn't really matter who we played but tonight I thought we played hard and with a lot of confidence. It was also nice to be able to get a few other guys some playing time in the third set."
SET 1
Kills from Kalchev and Tomsia gave CSUN an early 5-2 lead before the Matadors extended the lead to 8-4 on a Paul Rzepniewski solo block. CSUN maintained a four-point lead at 13-9 when another Tomsia kill fueled a 5-0 run that put the Matadors comfortably in front 18-9. A solo block by Kalchev pushed the CSUN lead to 10 at 21-11 before the Matadors settled for a 25-14 win.
SET 2
After the visitors scored the first four points of the set, the Matadors rallied behind a 7-2 run to take a 7-6 lead. An ensuing service error by Tomsia evened the score for the final time (7-7) before CSUN engineered a 12-2 run to take an insurmountable 19-9 lead. The Kingsmen would get within eight late in the set before the Matadors claimed three of the final four points in the 25-15 win.
SET 3
The final set was the tightest of the match as the teams battled through eight ties and a single lead change. A Reina kill gave Cal Lutheran an early 6-5 lead when a Kalchev kill propelled the Matadors on a 4-1 run which wrestled back the lead at 9-7. The visitors however scored two straight to tie the score at 9-9 and stayed even at 10-10 following a Mason Mercer kill. But with Wetter at the service line, CSUN all but sealed the match with a decisive 6-0 run which opened up a 16-10 cushion. The Kingsmen would get back within four at 22-18 before a pair of kills from Ryan DeWeese sandwiched a kill from Cole Chaffee and CSUN had the 25-18 win.
