Matadors Host Midweek Game vs. San Diego State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (8-8) returns to Matador Field on Tuesday afternoon to take on San Diego State at 3 p.m. An audio broadcast of the game will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call. The Matadors are coming off their first road trip of the season this past weekend in Washington State. CSUN dropped the opener in Pullman, 3-1, but bounced back with a 5-1 win in game two. The Cougars though took the rubber game by a 10-1 final.
Senior Walker Armstrong went the distance, tossing eight innings in the opener and racking up five strikeouts. Armstrong would receive the tough-luck loss after picking up his second-straight quality start. In game two, sophomore Wesley Moore was effective again on the mound by throwing 6.1 innings and allowing just one run on three hits. Moore (2-1) has yielded just eight hits this season and a minuscule .095 batting average.
On the offensive side, senior Jayson Newman kept up his hot hitting by hitting .455 (5-for-11) at the plate against the Cougars. Newman added two RBI and drew two walks to extend his on-base streak to 14-straight games. Senior Kyle Barret drove in three runs in the series and collected one of the team's seven doubles over the weekend.
Newman is second in the Big West in batting (.404), RBI (15) and on-base percentage (.500) while he is third in slugging percentage (.638) and doubles (5). The Big West leader in stolen bases (6), sophomore Brandon Bohning is ranked second in hits (21) and third in home runs (4). Also among the league leaders, junior Robert Bullard is second in runs scored (15) and Barret is ranked second in walks (12). As a team, the Matadors lead the Big West in home runs (17) and total bases (218) while they are second in hits (138), doubles (25), walks (75) and stolen bases (23).
Freshman right hander Blake Sodersten will make his second-straight Tuesday start this week. Sodersten has started three times in four appearances, posting a 4.15 ERA and nine strikeouts over 13.0 innings. Last Tuesday, Sodersten worked four innings, allowing four hits and one run in an eventual 11-9 win over St. John's.
In a series dating back to 1960, San Diego State leads the all-time series with CSUN 46-40. Since 2011, the Aztecs have won seven of the last nine meetings including the last two games, which have both been played in San Diego. Last season, the Aztecs came from behind to beat the Matadors 3-2 behind a three-run seventh inning. The teams last met at Matador Field in 2015 with CSUN prevailing 6-2.

The Aztecs are 7-7 on the season and 2-2 in Mountain West Conference play. San Diego State took two of three games from Nevada at Tony Gwynn Stadium over the weekend. Last season, SDSU went 39-21, winning the Mountain West Tournament to secure a spot in the NCAA Regionals. Head coach Mark Martinez is in his fifth season at the helm of the Aztecs.
Senior Angelo Armenta leads the Mountain West in on-base percentage (.569) to go with a .391 batting average, 11 runs and seven RBI. Junior Julian Escobedo is the team's top run producer with 14 RBI with 11 runs, two home runs and a .472 slugging percentage. As a team, the Aztecs are hitting .281 and have tallied 148 strikeouts as a pitching staff.
