Matadors To Compete in Roman College Basketball Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball has accepted an invitation to compete in the Roman College Basketball Invitational. CSUN will travel to take on Utah Valley in the opening round of the 16-team tournament on Tuesday, March 19 at 6 p.m.
A video stream will be provided through Utah Valley while audio coverage will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health via GoMatadors.com with Ghizal Hasan on the call.

The Matadors (13-20) will compete in the Roman CBI for the first time in team history and in their first national postseason tournament since earning an NCAA Tournament bid in 2009. First established in 2007, all Roman CBI games will take place at campus sites.

First-year head coach Mark Gottfried led the Matadors to their most wins in five seasons and a sixth-place finish in the Big West Conference. The team improved its win total by seven games from last season and returned back to the Big West Tournament. Possessing one of the youngest rosters in the country, eight Matadors made their Division I debuts this season including seven freshmen.

Leading the newcomers, freshman Lamine Diane has produced one of the best freshman seasons in the country. Diane won three major Big West Conference awards including Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, becoming the first player in the history of the league to accomplish the feat. Diane also received USBWA All-District IX honors after finishing the Big West Tournament first in the nation in field goals made (329) and in the Top 10 in points per game (24.7) and rebounds per game (11.3).

Gomez also had a stellar season for the Matadors, earning All-Big West Conference honors for the first time. The 5-8 guard is second in the Big West in scoring at 19.1 points per game and tops in the league in 3-point field goals made (113) and minutes per game (37.7).
The Wolverines went 24-9 this season, tying a school record for wins in a single season. UVU went 13-1 at the UCCU Center this season.

The winner of CSUN and Utah Valley will face the winner of South Florida and Stony Brook in the quarterfinals of the Roman CBI on March 25. Semifinal round games take place from March 27-28. The Roman CBI finals will be a best-of-three series from April 1-5 and televised on ESPNU.
