Gomez Reaches 1,000 Career Points, CSUN Edged by Utah Valley 92-84
3/19/2019 9:21:00 PM | Men's Basketball
OREM, Utah---On a night where sophomore Terrell Gomez surpassed 1,000 career points, CSUN Men's Basketball (13-21) fell just short in a 92-84 loss to Utah Valley in the first round of the Roman College Basketball Invitational on Tuesday night. Gomez became the third-fastest Matador in team history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Lamine Diane capped off an amazing freshman season with 27 points and seven rebounds while Gomez added 22 points. Freshman Elijah Harkless enjoyed a career night off the bench, tallying 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Utah Valley shot 45.0 percent from the field and knocked down 9-of-24 from 3-point range (37.5 percent) while CSUN finished shooting 41.0 percent and converted on 7-of-28 from long range (25.0 percent). The Wolverines controlled the glass, out-rebounding CSUN 49-34. The Matadors finished with a season-high 16 steals.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"Our players have played so hard all year long. They played hard tonight, they never quit. I couldn't be any more prouder of a group and I couldn't ask any more of them. They did a great job, unfortunately, we came up a little bit short.
Elijah played great and he did a great job defensively too. Both ends of the floor, he played hard and played aggressively. When you look at the young guys like Elijah, Ron, Terrell, Darius, all those young guys have a lot to build on."
FIRST HALF
The Matadors came out quickly at the outset of the game as Diane made his first four shots. The freshman would finish with a dunk after a Gomez steal that gave the Matadors their biggest lead at 13-7 at the 16:56 mark. A 3-pointer from Jake Toolson cut the Matador lead to 15-12 at the first media timeout. Darius Brown II would later knock down a shot from downtown that pushed the lead back to six (20-14). The Wolverines would fight back with a 7-0 run to go in front 23-22 at the 11:43 mark.
CSUN battled back in front after a jumper from Gomez but UVU went on another 8-0 spurt to surge into the lead. Harkless would give the Matadors a boost off the bench following early foul trouble for Brown. The Wolverines extended to a 44-32 lead before Harkless knocked down a 3-pointer. CSUN finished the half strong following a 3-pointer from Gomez and a late layup from Ron Artest III to pull within 44-40 at the break.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors continued to find success on the offensive end despite an early fourth foul called on Brown. Artest crashed the glass and finished at the rim to bring CSUN within 47-46. Moments later, Gomez drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at the 16:23 mark. Harkless played outstanding on the defensive end, picking up a pair of steals within a 23-second span that led to buckets from Rodney Henderson Jr. and Gomez.
The Wolverines though went on a 9-1 run, capped off by a trey from Toolson that made it a 71-59 game. Sitting at 997 career points, Gomez reached the 1,000-point benchmark on a 3-pointer with 9:51 to play. Down the stretch, the Matadors continued to chip away at the UVU lead. Harkless led the fastbreak leading to a Henderson Jr. 3-pointer then he finished himself around the hoop to pull CSUN within three (78-75).
After Harkless fed Diane for a dunk, he made two free throws and cut the lead to 82-79. UVU would strike quickly on the ensuing play as Richard Harward made a layup at the 2:06 mark. The lead stood at 86-82 before Isaiah White found daylight and dunked the ball with just over a minute to play. CSUN trimmed the deficit to four and picked up a steal but Gomez missed a 3-pointer. Harward would grab the rebound and hit two key free throws on the other end. The Matadors came up empty on their next two possessions, securing the UVU win.
