
CSUN Tops UC Davis, Finishes 1-1 on Day Two in Pismo Beach

PISMO BEACH, Calif. - After splitting two matches Friday, the CSUN Beach Volleyball team went 1-1 again Saturday with a win over UC Davis and a loss to No. 6 Hawai'i at the Big West Challenge at Pismo Beach.
#6 HAWAI'I 5, CSUN 0
In Saturday's opener, the Matadors were blanked for just the third time in 15 matches this season as sixth-ranked Hawai'i won all five matches in straight sets.
Cassidy Rosso and Kailey Klein came the closest to earning a point for CSUN as the Matador pair fell to Sofia Russo and Paige Dreeuws, 21-13, 21-11 at No. 5. In the No. 1 pair, Daniella Molinari and Seyvion Waggoner pushed Emily Maglio and Amy Ozee to 15 points in set one before falling 21-4 in set two. Taylor Brydon and Lauren McMurray also scored 15 points in set one in the No. 3 match before falling 21-7 in the second set to Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon.
The Sand 'Bows won easily in the No. 2 and No. 4 pairs as CSUN's Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan fell to Julia Scoles and Ari Homayun, 21-12, 21-5 and Nicole Nevarez and Lexi McLeod lost to Kylin Loker and Hi'Ilawe Huddleston 21-12, 21-8.

In the first ever meeting between the Matadors and Aggies in beach volleyball, CSUN (8-9) pulled out a 3-2 win over the first-year program.
The Matadors got on the board first in the No. 4 pair as Brydon and McMurray got back in the win column with a 21-16, 21-17 victory over Rose Holscher and Demari Webb. CSUN made it 2-0 when Nevarez and McLeod swept Paloma Bowman and Josephine Ough, 21-19, 21-15.
Seeking to clinch the dual at No. 1, Molinari and Waggoner fell to Lauren Matias and Jane Seslar by the score of 21-17, 22-20 pulling UC Davis within 2-1. The Aggies then pulled out a three-set (21-19, 11-21, 15-9) win in the No. 5 pair as Nicole Andrade and Alexa Rockas held off Rosso and Klein to even the match.
The dual match came down to CSUN's freshmen pair of Honeycutt and Maughan at No. 2. The pair came through with a hard-fought 22-20, 18-21, 15-7 victory over Heather Reed and Savanah Schroeder to give the Matadors their eighth win of the season.
COACH NOELLE ROOKE SAID
"The elements were a little more manageable today and I thought our team as a whole handled things with poise to end the day with a victory."
UP NEXT
The Matadors conclude the Big West Challenge with two matches on Sunday. CSUN takes on No. 9 Long Beach State at 11 a.m. before a 2 p.m. match against Sacramento State closes the competition.
