SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — CSUN Beach Volleyball saw its season come to an end after dropping a 3-0 decision to Hawaii in an elimination match on Friday at the Big West Beach Volleyball Championship at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
The BeachBows (19-13) clinched the match with straight-set victories on three courts. Hawaii secured the dual with wins at Nos. 1, 5, and 4, leaving the remaining two matches unfinished.
16th-ranked Hawai'i, the No. 3 seed in the championship, opened the scoring when Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile defeated CSUN's top pair, Hannah Heflin and Maleya Miles, in straight sets, 21-11, 21-11. The second pair to finish came on the No. 5 court, where Haley Coggins and Daysha Halbert battled but were unable to extend the match, falling to Sarah Burton and Sophie Buschmann by the score of 21-14, 21-15.
The clinching point for the BeachBows came at No. 4, where Jill Rodig and Ainsley Patrick pushed Hawaii's Kristen Serrano and Caprice Lorenzo before falling 21-15, 21-17.
The Matadors (10-23) were competitive in the unfinished matches. At No. 2, Tia Mendiola and Zaria Henderson split momentum after a narrow 21-19 first-set loss, responding with a 17-13 lead in the second before play was halted. Meanwhile, Ava Rogers and Dylan Hall rebounded from a lopsided opening set at No. 3 to win the second 21-15 and had taken an early edge in the third set when the dual was decided.
HEAD COACH JEFF HALL SAID
"What a season….I am so proud of this team. They fought for every point in every dual; I couldn't ask for anything else. We send our seniors off to the real world now and thank them for their dedication and commitment to this program. They have each helped lay the foundation for this program. For the returners, we look forward to the Fall and to training once again. Have a great summer, see you in August."
