Kalchev Sets Aces Record in CSUN's 3-0 Win Over St. Francis
3/8/2019 10:16:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Dimitar Kalchev put down nine kills and served a match-high five aces to become CSUN's all-time leader as the 12th-ranked Matadors swept Saint Francis in a non-conference match Friday night at The Matadome.
With the 3-0 win (25-21, 25-20, 25-23), CSUN snaps a two-match skid and improves to 9-8. The visiting Red Flash drop to 11-7 with the loss.
KEY STATISTICS
• Kalchev came into the match tied with Eric Vance for second place in CSUN history with 181 career aces before moving into a tie for first with Eckhard Walter (183) with aces on the first two points of the match. He then took over as the all-time leader with his third ace midway through the second set before finishing the night with 186 career aces. The senior outside hitter also had nine kills (.250), two digs and two blocks.
• Sophomore Maciej Ptaszynski put down a team-high 11 kills, hitting .667 on 15 swings. CSUN's two middles, Paul Rzepniewski and Daniel Wetter combined for 15 kills on .824 hitting. Rzepniewski had eight kills on eight errorless attacks while Wetter finished the night with seven kills and one error on nine attacks.
• Taylor Ittner handed out 35 assists to go with four digs while libero Emmett Enriques scooped up a match-high seven digs in the win.
• Both teams hit well as CSUN hit .417 (41-11-72) while the Red Flash hit .408 (38-9-71). The Matadors served 11 team aces and had 21 digs to 16 for St. Francis.
• Michael Fisher led the Red Flash with a match-high 18 kills, hitting .654 on 26 attacks.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Saint Francis is a very good team, we had a little bit of an advantage in the middle but it really was great win for us to beat a team like that in three sets. Dimitar played great tonight and caused them a lot of problems with his serving. He wanted to be the best and the aces record is really just a testament to how hard he works and how much time and effort he has put in on his craft his entire career."
SET 1
The Matadors pulled out the opening set, 25-23 despite being out-hit .429 to .379. With the score tied at 15-15, CSUN scored five straight points, the last coming on a Kalchev kill, to open up a 20-15 lead. The Matadors extended the lead to six (23-17) following an Ittner ace before The Red Flash rallied behind a 4-0 run to pull within 23-21. But kills from Ksawery Tomsia and Kalchev ended the run and sent CSUN to the 25-21 win.
SET 2
The visitors held an early 6-2 lead when the Matadors put together an 8-4 run to knot the score at 10. CSUN opened up a 15-13 lead on a Ptaszynski ace before a 3-1 St. Francis run tied the score again at 16-16. A Ptaszynski kill then fueled a decisive 5-1 Matador run that pushed the lead to 21-17. The Red Flash would get within two on a pair of occasions, the last at 22-20, when a pair of St. Francis errors followed by a Ryan DeWeese ace gave CSUN the 25-20 win.
SET 3
Neither team led by more than two for a majority of the final set when the Matadors overcame a 15-13 Red Flash lead by scoring five straight points to take an 18-15 lead. St. Francis quickly cut the lead to one (18-17) and were still within one at 23-22 when a Fisher ace evened the set at 23-23. After CSUN called timeout, DeWeese connected for a kill before a Red Flash hitting error sent the Matadors to the 25-23 win.
