Matadors Sweep Lindenwood to Cap Non-Conference Season
3/9/2019 9:46:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Dimitar Kalchev pounded a match-high 13 kills while serving five aces for the second straight night as the 12th-ranked CSUN Matadors swept visiting Lindenwood in its final non-conference match of the season Saturday night at The Matadome.
With the 3-0 win (25-17, 25-22, 25-15), CSUN improves to 10-8 on the season while the Lions drop to 7-13.
KEY STATISTICS
• After becoming CSUN's all-time leader in career aces Friday against Saint Francis, Kalchev added five more to his career tally against Lindenwood. The senior from Khardzali, Bulgaria, who now has 191 career aces, also led all hitters in the match with 13 kills on .385 hitting.
• After hitting .667 in Friday's win, sophomore Maciej Ptaszynski capped an efficient offensive weekend by hitting .571 with eight kills against the Lions. Redshirt freshman Paul Rzepniewski also had a solid night, putting down six kills on .455 hitting to go with one ace and a pair of blocks.
• Taylor Ittner notched his first collegiate double-double, posting 31 assists and a season-high 12 digs. Ittner led the Matador hitters to a .338 team hitting clip, one night after CSUN hit .417 against Saint Francis.
• In addition to a sizable advantage in hitting (.338-.129), the Matadors served 10 aces to three for the Lions.
• Connor Hipelius led Lindenwood with seven kills, hitting .600 on 10 attacks.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Our guys played well tonight. It's all about playing well and continuing to get better and the guys did that tonight. I thought we served better than we did last night and certainly did a good job of keeping them out of system for the most part."
SET 1
The Matadors used some tough serving to open up an early 6-2 lead. But the visitors rallied behind a 5-1 run to knot the score at 7-7 when Kalchev's attack was stuffed by the Lindenwood block. Kalchev connected for a kill on the next point and CSUN quickly built the lead back to three at 10-7. The teams then traded sideouts until one of three Ryan DeWeese aces opened up a 15-11 cushion. The visitors would only get within three at 18-15 when the Matadors pulled away late for the 25-17 win.Â
SET 2
CSUN out-hit Lindenwood .323 to .097 in the set but only won by three points. The Lions held a pair of early four-point leads before a Kalchev kill capped a 3-0 CSUN run, giving the Matadors a 10-9 lead. CSUN still led by one at 15-14 when kills from Kalchev and Daniel Wetter and a Ptaszynski ace boosted the lead to 18-14. The visitors trimmed the lead to one at 20-19 and again at 21-20 before a Ptaszynski kill sent the Matadors on a set-clinching 4-2 run to seal the 25-22 win.
SET 3
CSUN scored six of the first seven points of the final set when the Lions spent their first timeout. A kill by DeWeese extended the lead to seven (10-3) and the Matadors maintained a seven-point edge on Kalchev's fifth and final ace (15-8). Still leading by the same margin (22-15), CSUN closed the set and the match on a Ptaszynski kill and a pair of Lion miscues.
UP NEXT
CSUN returns to Big West Conference play next weekend as the Matadors travel to Honolulu to face No. 2 Hawai'i for a pair of matches (Mar. 15-16).
