CSUN Falls to #8 UCSB 4-2

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (19-25, 6-11 BWC) dropped a tight 4-2 decision to No. 8 UC Santa Barbara (35-7, 11-3 BWC) on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Taking the hard-luck loss, senior Isaiah Nunez worked 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to go with five strikeouts. Senior Kyle Barret went 1-for-3 with an RBI while junior Blake Doremus picked up an RBI single.
A day after the two teams combined for 31 hits and 23 runs, the Matadors and Gauchos managed six combined runs on Saturday. UCSB would collect just enough timely hits to pick up a series-clinching win.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Nunez looked sharp in the early going as the left hander retired the UCSB side in order in the top of the first inning. In the second, Nunez kept the ball on the infield throughout most of the frame but the Gauchos would collect several well-placed hits to get on the scoreboard first.
After Nunez retired the leadoff hitter Armani Smith in the second, Andrew Martinez and Tommy Jew reached on infield singles. Marcos Castanon followed with a single that just scooted past a diving Brandon Bohning on the left side to load the bases. Nunez would strike out Kyle Johnson on three pitches before Tevin Mitchell hit a grounder to the right side. Barret stopped the ball by the edge of the grass in right field but could not pull off a throw to first base. Two runs would score on the infield hit by Mitchell to give UCSB a 2-0 edge. Nunez walked the next batter before retiring Eric Yang, leaving the bases loaded.
The Matadors managed two hits through the first three innings before picking up a pair in the fourth inning. Jose Ruiz walked to start the inning then Sean Skelly singled into left-center field to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Barret came through with a sacrifice fly to cut the UCSB lead to 2-1. CSUN would settle for just one run as UCSB starter Jack Dashwood retired two of the next three batters.
The Gauchos answered back in the fifth inning to push their lead back to two runs at 3-1. McClain O'Connor doubled to start the inning and advanced to third base on a groundout. Nunez forced Thomas Rowan to fly out to center field but the drive was deep enough to bring home O'Connor for a sacrifice fly.
Nunez allowed just one base runner over his last two innings of work as Mitchell reached on a one-out error in the seventh. Mitchell would eventually be thrown out trying to steal third base by Skelly.
On the flip side, Dashwood worked six innings, allowing one run on four hits. In the sixth, the Matadors had a runner in scoring position with two outs after Barret stole second base. Dashwood though struck out Robert Bullard to end the inning.
Blaine Traxel relieved Nunez after seven innings and tossed a shutout eighth. However, UCSB picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth to take a 4-1 lead. Castanon doubled to kick off the ninth inning and he later scored on a Mitchell RBI single. Traxel eventually faced Yang with runners at corners with two outs before retiring the UCSB catcher on a fly ball to right field.
CSUN forged one final rally in the bottom of the ninth, trailing by three runs. Angelo Bortolin came off the bench and rifled a single to left field. After pinch-runner Damiano Palmegiani advanced to second base on defensive indifference, another pinch-hitter, Doremus, roped a single to right center field to bring in CSUN's second run.
The Matadors brought the tying run to the plate against UCSB closer Chris Lincoln but Austin Elder and Andrew Lucas would be retired in order to end the game.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"We swung the bats aggressively - we just didn't get the big hit to score a few runs. Isaiah Nunez did what he does. He was professional - he moved the fastball, changed speeds and set the tone for us on the mound. It was a pretty workman-like day for the pitching staff. I thought they a good job bouncing back."
GAME NOTES
Nunez notched his eighth quality start of the season on Saturday including his third in Big West play. Barret has now hit safely in 15 of the 16 Big West games he has played in.
For UCSB, Mitchell finished 2-for-4 with three RBI while Smith had two doubles.
UP NEXT
The Matadors and Gauchos conclude a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. A video stream of the game will air live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call.
