Matadors Ride Two First-Half Goals to 2-1 Win Over Houston
9/1/2019 9:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HOUSTON, Texas---CSUN Women's Soccer (3-1) rode two first-half goals to a 2-1 victory over Houston (2-2) on Sunday evening at Carl Lewis International Complex. Freshman Kimberly Anderson scored her first career goal in the early moments of the match while sophomore Alexis White notched her team-best third goal of the season. Sophomore Amanda Delgado would post two saves in net as CSUN's defense kept the Cougars off the scoreboard in the second half.
The teams finished tied in the shot department at 10-10 but the Matadors put more shots on goal with eight compared to the Cougars' three. In corner kicks, the Matadors held a narrow edge at 8-7. CSUN was whistled for seven fouls while Houston had three.
FIRST HALF
The Matadors went on the attack at the outset of the game, picking up a corner kick at the 1:02 mark. Shortly thereafter, Cindy Arteaga attempted the Matadors' first shot, which was saved by Sammy Cude. CSUN though would come away with its first score moments later. Sydney Gilbert made a play down the right side of the field before crossing the ball into the box. After a few touches, Anderson cleaned up the play from inside the box to put the Matadors ahead 1-0.
Delgado made both of her saves on the night in the first half as she stopped shots from Cassidy Formanek in the fifth minute and Hayley Hubbard in the 29th minute. The score remained 1-0 until the 29:36 mark where White went to work. Corralling a pass from Gabriela Robles, White put on her track shoes and ran past the defense, making a pair of dribbles inside the Cougars' box. Finding room, White scored for the third time on the road trip to put the Matadors ahead 2-0. The Cougars would answer back late in the half as Reid Morrison headed in a pass from Mia Brascia in the 43rd minute.Â
SECOND HALF
After the three goals in the first half, the defenses would settle in after intermission. The Matadors' defense shined through in the second half, holding Houston to just two shots over the final 45 minutes with none on goal. CSUN would withstand three corner kicks but the Cougars were unsuccessful in earning any shot attempts on those opportunities. Amy Nguyen came away with the Cougars' final shot of the night in the 66th minute which went wide of the net.
The Matadors would continue to apply the pressure offensively throughout the stanza as the trio of Gabriella Hinojosa, Bethany Fitzsimmons and Izabel Reyes all had shots on goal. Still looking for the equalizer, the Cougars earned their last corner kick in the 84th minute before CSUN managed the clock down the stretch to pick up the win.
GAME NOTES
Anderson, White and Reyes all finished with two shots in the match to lead the Matadors. Off the bench, freshman Amya LawsonKitchen made her Matador debut late in the first half. The Matadors have won three times through their first four matches for the first time since the 2015 season.
HEAD COACH KEITH WEST SAID
"We had moments of being really good and other moments when we weren't so good tonight. But I'm happy with the team's spirit and how they responded today after the loss on Friday. Winning on the road is hard but I thought we could finish 3-1 on this road trip going in because of the level of talent on the team."
