CSUN Plays to Scoreless Draw with Kansas State
9/6/2019 8:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (3-1-1) played Kansas State to a 0-0 draw in its home opener on Friday at Matador Soccer Field. Sophomore Amanda Delgado notched six saves in the match including three in the extra time to notch her first shutout of the season. Freshman Cindy Arteaga recorded a team-high five shots with three on goal.
In the back-and-forth match, the Wildcats owned a narrow edge in shots, 18-16, while CSUN posted a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Matadors also won the corner kick battle at 7-6. A total of 23 fouls were whistled in the match with CSUN called for 13 of them. Both Stephanie Gallardo and Amber Edemann were shown yellow cards along with K-State's Silke Bonnen.
FIRST HALF
Bethany Fitzsimmons nearly came away with an early goal in the seventh minute but her attempt skipped just wide of the net. The Matadors would pick up a pair of early blocked shots on the backline before Delgado made her lone save of the half at the 10:48 mark. Sydney Gilbert also earned a quality look at the net from the right wing before goalkeeper Emma Malsy came up to block away the shot attempt.
CSUN again went on the attack near the 20th-minute mark, earning a shot on goal from Fitzsimmons and a miss from Avery DeWitt followed by an aggressive play down the field that resulted in an offside call. Near the end of the half, Amya LawsonKitchen forced Malsy to make one of her three saves in the period with a late shot.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors came out as the aggressors after intermission as Arteaga earned two shots while Amanda Martin missed wide in the first four minutes of action. On the flip side, Delgado made outstanding plays in front of the net including a diving stop off a header from less than 10 yards away from Caylee Thornhill in the 70th minute.
Perhaps the Matadors' best look of the half came in the 86th minute when Arteaga made a break for the goal from the left wing. On the breakaway, Arteaga found room from less than 10 yards but her shot would hit the post after a deflection by a defender. Both sides played even down the stretch as the match entered overtime.
OVERTIME
LawsonKitchen and Arteaga each gave the Matadors looks at the net but were unable to come away with the deciding goal. Kansas State earned several attacks of its own over the final 20 minutes including successive attempts in the 97th minute. Delgado would make two crucial saves on those shots as well as a late stop from her knees in the 109th minute to keep the match scoreless. Fitzsimmons took the Matadors' final shot of the night early in the second overtime but it would also go wide of the net.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I love the spirit of this group. We've been rotating players in and out to make stuff happen. I told our team it was going to be wide open tonight and it was. The shot count was pretty even and that stats were even across the board. I saw on film Kansas State was a good side and I knew if we were to fall asleep they would get us. I felt we had three or four good looks on goal and that's what I told the team. We just have to put a couple of those away."
GAME NOTES
Delgado's shutout is her fourth of her career after notching three during her freshman campaign. Fitzsimmons collected four shots with two on goal while LawsonKitchen had three attempts with one on goal off the bench.
