GOLETA, Calif. - Another tough five-set match greeted the CSUN Women's Volleyball team Tuesday as the Matadors opened the Big West season with a 3-2 loss to UC Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome.

• The Gauchos' Lindsey Ruddins led all hitters in the match with 20 kills on .314 hitting.
COACH JEFF STORK SAID
"Although we didn't win the match, this was a positive step for this team. We put ourselves in a position to win and I was proud that the team was focused and stayed in the moment. Mentally, we didn't get too far ahead or too far behind ourselves. Even though we started out poorly, we got much better as the match went on which was encouraging."
SET 1
The Matadors got off to a rough start, trailing 8-1 after just nine points. A Waggoner solo block brought CSUNÂ within four at 10-6 but the Matadors were outscored 5-1 over the next six points as the hosts extended the lead to 15-7. The UCSB lead grew to double figures at 18-8 and the Gauchos won the set handily 25-9.
SET 2
CSUN fell into a 5-2 hole early in the second set before a 6-2 run, capped by a Nevarez-Morgan Salone block, gave the Matadors an 8-7 lead. A Waggoner kill capped a 3-0 CSUN run which opened up the Matadors' largest lead at 12-9. But the Gauchos scored on five of the next six points out of a timeout to go back on top 14-13. The teams then traded sideouts until UCSBÂ forged a 20-17 lead. But CSUN wouldn't go away as the Matadors engineered a 6-2 run, capped by a pair of Anderson blocks, to wrestle back the lead 23-22. After a Gaucho block, kills from Nevarez and Anderson evened the match at one set apiece.Â
 Â
SET 3
After UCSB held an early three-point lead (7-4), a triple block by Salone, Makekau-Whittaker and Nevarez highlighted a 6-0 CSUN run that gave the Matadors a 10-7 lead. An Orshoff kill gave the Matadors an 18-12 lead and CSUN eventually led by as many as seven at 21-14 following one of Anderson's three aces. The Matador lead wouldn't dip below five points the rest of the set as CSUN built a two sets to one lead.
 Â
SET 4
Neither team led by more than two points for a good portion of the set. With the score tied at 14-14, the Matadors took advantage of a Nevarez kill, an Anderson ace and a Gaucho hitting error to open up a 17-14 lead. UCSB scored three straight out of a timeout and the two teams headed to the homestretch tied at 17-17. Each team put together a 2-0 run but the set remained tied at 20-20 following a Gigi Ruddins kill. A Lexi McLeod kill gave CSUN its final lead of the set before a 3-0 Gaucho run forced a Matador timeout. A Waggoner kill cut the lead to 23-22 but UCSB scored two of the final three points to grab a 25-23 win.
 Â
SET 5
The Gauchos scored the first three points and would never trail in the set. Still down three at 5-2, CSUN rallied to get back within 6-5 on a Nevarez kill and a UCSB setting error. The Matadors still trailed by one at 8-7 but were outscored 4-1 over the next five points to call a timeout at 12-8. The Gauchos got a kill out of the timeout to extend the lead to 13-8 before a Waggoner kill gave the Matadors their final point of the night as UCSB claimed the final two points in a 15-9 win.
