Cross Country Continues Campaign in Santa Clarita

NORTHRIDGE, Calif - The CSUN men and women's cross country teams will continue the 2019 season in Santa Clarita, Calif., for The Master's University Invitational Saturday with the races beginning at 7:00 a.m. The dual collegiate-high school meet will also include local teams UCLA, USC and conference foe Cal State Fullerton.
For the women, Alyssa Segovia paced the Matadors in the Matadors' opening race this year (USD Invite on Sept. 13) with a time of 25:03.5 which was 36th. Following Segovia's lead was junior Heidi Eligio. Eligio finished 39th with a time of 25:19.3 while averaging a mile time of 6:47 during the race. Both Matadors will be looking to better their times as the season moves along.Â
On the men's side, two freshman led the group during the USD Invite. Noah Contreras, paced the Matadors to begin the season with a 34th place finish (28:52.0). Following the Contreras train was another freshman, James Moore, who finished 38th with a time of 29:39.3. The freshman-led squad will hope to continue improving with each meet.
"The team has been training hard since our last competition," said head coach Justin Johnson. "We will continue to grow every week and this meet is another opportunity for us to get better."Â
The men will run an 8k beginning at 7:00 a.m. with the women getting underway at 7:45 a.m. Â Live results will be available at http://www.royalresults.com and also http://GoMustangs.com/xcinvitational. The event will feature over 1,500 runners, a record number for the event in its eighth year in a row.Â
