SANTA CLARITA, Calif - The CSUN women's cross country team, paced by Alyssa Segovia, finished 13th out of 31 teams in the 5k race while the men, paced by Noah Contreras were 25th in the 8k race Saturday morning at the Master's University Invitational at Central Park.
On the women's side, Segovia, paced the Matadors for the second consecutive race this year with her time of 19:03.2 (51st) while eclipsing her personal best in a 5k (19:36.8 at the 2018 Highlander Invitational as a freshman). Following Segovia's lead was junior Heidi Eligio. Eligio finished 65th with a time of 19:11.9 while averaging a mile time of 6:10 during the race.
Alyssa DeStasio was next to finish for CSUN (90th, 19:33.8) while also running a personal best for a 5k. Her last PR came at the 2018 Highlander Invitational (19:57.1)
Freshman Julianna Navarro competed in her first race Friday as well, as she finished 218th, (21:48.0)
For the men's side, Contreras, a freshman, paced the Matadors for a second time in two races with a 129th place finish (27:48.3). Sophomore Daniel Fendrich would follow Contreras's lead with a time of 28:40.5 (172nd). Freshman James Moore, averaging a 5:55/mile pace, would finish 212th (29.29.5). Freshman Francicso Soria competed in his first race as well. He finished 297th with a time of 1:09:58.1.
Coach Justin Johnson had some thoughts after his team completed its second meet of the campaign.
"I was very happy with the way the men and the women competed today," he said "You can see their confidence growing as the season progresses. We will continue to build off this performance."
The next race for the Matadors will be in three weeks on Oct. 19 for the 2019 Highlander Invitational hosted by UC Riverside in Riverside, Calif.
