CSUN Falls to Concordia in Second Straight Five-Setter
1/11/2020 12:22:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman Kyle Hobus' match-high 29 kills wasn't enough as the 13th-ranked CSUN Men's Volleyball team dropped its second straight five-set match as Concordia knocked off the Matadors Friday night at the UCSB Asics Invitational at Rob Gym.
Set scores were 24-26, 40-38, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13 as Concordia improves to 2-1 while CSUN drops to 0-2 on the young season.
KEY STATISTICS
• Hobus, who began the night at the opposite before moving to the outside hitter spot, finished with 29 kills (.291) to lead all hitters. The redshirt freshman from San Pedro, who also tied for the team-high with 14 digs, now has 53 kills in his first two collegiate matches.
• Sophomore Daniel Wetter added a career-high 14 kills, hitting .500 on a career-high 24 swings. Junior Maciej Ptaszynski chipped in 10 kills (.179) and 14 digs for his third career double-double. Junior libero Sean Mitchell also reached double figures with 10 digs, a new career-high.
• Sophomore setter Taylor Ittner established a new career-high with 67 assists to go with seven digs and five blocks.
• The Matadors out-hit the Eagles by the margin of .239 to .209 and had a 73-61 edge in digs but committed 29 service errors.
• Raymond Barsemian led Concordia with 20 kills (.245).
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Obviously the guys are disappointed that we didn't come out with a win. We competed really hard, but for the second night in a row we just needed to come up with another point of two. I think we were a little tired from going five sets last night as well but we'll continue to get better, it's a long process."
SET 1
Neither team led by more than one point until Hobus' hitting error gave the Eagles a 10-8 lead early on. Still trailing 10-9, the Matadors went on a 7-3 run to force a Concordia timeout at 16-13. The Eagles trimmed the lead to one at 16-15 before a Paul Rzepniewski solo block capped a 6-3 CSUN run giving the Matadors a 22-18 cushion. A late run by the Eagles tied the score at 23-23 before CSUN claimed three of the final four points, the last coming on a Hobus kill, to take a 26-24 win.
SET 2
In a marathon second set, the Matadors forced an early Concordia timeout as an Eagle hitting error put the CSUN in front 13-9. A Ptaszynski kill extended the Matador lead to six at 18-12 when the Eagles scored six straight points to even the set. Neither team could forge more than a one-point lead over the next 40 points as the two teams traded sideouts while saving set points. CSUN had swings at the set on four occasions while Concordia had six attempts before cashing in their seventh in a 40-38 win. The set was the longest for the Matadors since 42-40 loss to UC Irvine in 2009.

SET 3
Concordia looked to build on the momentum as the Eagles led by as many as three in the early stages. Trailing 14-11, the Matadors got kills from Luke Krzmarzick and a pair of Ptaszynski to knot the score at 14-14. After a series of sideouts, an Ittner kill and a Matador triple block gave CSUN a 21-19 advantage. The Eagles again rallied to tie the score at 21-21 before the Matadors claimed four of the final five points to take a 25-22 win.

SET 4
Two points was all that separated the two teams for the majority of the fourth set as each team enjoyed a pair of two-point leads. CSUN trailed 18-16 when a Wetter kill and an Eagle hitting error tied the score. The score was still tied at 20-20, when a Hobus service error propelled Concordia on a set-clinching 5-1 run which forced a fifth and deciding set.Â
 Â
SET 5
The Matadors claimed four of the first five points when consecutive Eagle hitting errors gave CSUN a 4-1 lead. The lead was short-lived however as Concordia answered with a 4-1 run of its own. With the score knotted at 5-5, an Eagle service error gave the Matadors their final lead of the night at 6-5. After Concordia built an 8-6 lead, CSUN battled back to tie the score 9-9 on a Wetter kill. But that was as close as the Matadors would get as the Eagles converted their second match point in a 15-13 win.
