Former Matador All-American Bob Samuelson and former CSUN men's assistant coach Jerritt Elliott were among five other inductees celebrated as the 2025 induction class joined the 2026 class that was honored on May 3. The 2025 induction class also included John Brame, Howard Enstedt, Chuck Erbe, Alix Klineman, and Krista Vansant Hendrickson. The SCIVBHOF is housed at the Forza1 Performance Center in Temecula.
The pair joins a host of other SCIVBHOF Hall of Famers with CSUN connections, including Jeff Stork (CSUN Women's Volleyball Head Coach, 2002-19), Linda Muphy (CSUN Women's Volleyball Head Coach, 1975-76), Gary Sato (CSUN Beach Volleyball Assistant Coach, 2015), and Mary Perry (CSUN Women's Volleyball student-athlete, 1972-74).
Samuelson lettered for CSUN Men's Volleyball in 1988 and 1989. He earned Volleyball Magazine honorable mention All-America honors as a senior in 1989 after leading CSUN with 637 kills while averaging 6.50 kills per set. Samuelson, who also earned second-team All-WIVA accolades during his senior campaign, hit .353 on 1,203 attacks to go with 20 aces, 199 digs, and 108 total blocks. He still ranks first in CSUN Men's Volleyball history with a 5.31 kills per set average over his two-year Matador career.
Samuelson went on to play for the U.S. National Team, earning a Bronze Medal at the Barcelona Games in 1992.
Coach in 1993
Elliott, a National Championship college coach at Texas, served as an assistant coach for the CSUN men's team under John Price in 1993. Elliott spent the 1992 season as a volunteer assistant under Price after moving over from Marymount High School, where he also served as the girls' team head coach in 1992. He earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from CSUN in 1992.
In his first full season as a member of the CSUN men's coaching staff in 1993, Elliott joined Price and fellow assistant coach Jeff Campbell in leading the Matadors to arguably their most successful season in program history. CSUN finished 23-10 overall (13-6 in the MPSF) and earned a spot in the NCAA Final Four after winning the MPSF Tournament Championship in straight sets over Long Beach State. The Matadors swept Penn State in the NCAA semifinals to advance to their first-ever national championship match, where CSUN fell to UCLA, 3-0.
Elliott has won NCAA women's titles at the University of Texas in 2012, 2022, and 2023.
Selected for their lifetime volleyball service are standout player and CIF championship coach Rocky Ciarelli of Huntington Beach HS fame, and former UCSB NCAA finalist Marc 'Cubby' Jacobs, who made a local career from public address announcing for both the Gauchos and UCLA Bruins. Both are deceased, but have left lasting volleyball memories.
Erbe won AIAW titles in 1976, '77 and 1980, plus the first NCAA women's championship in 1981. Enstedt coached some of the greatest players of all-time, including SCIVBHOF members Chris Marlowe, Don Shaw, Dave Saunders, Fred Sturm, Steve Salmons, and Ricci Luyties.
Klineman played indoors for the USA team, but is known for winning the 2020 Olympic beach gold medal with SCIVBHOFer April Ross in Tokyo in 2021 Vansant Hendrickson, who is currently the University of Illinois Assistant Coach, was the AVCA Player of the Year and Honda Award winner at the University of Washington between 2013-15. Brame was a brilliant player in the 1950s as a standout for the Hollywood YMCA, a Pan-American Games player, and a person who introduced volleyball throughout the world through his Navy work.
Ciarelli, who coached over 30 years in Orange County and won three CIF championships, played and assisted at Long Beach State. Jacobs played for UC Santa Barbara in the 1974 NCAA title match, and was known as the first great indoor volleyball announcer for both UCSB and UCLA, coining many terms that are still used today.
2025 INDUCTEES:Â John Brame, Jerritt Elliott, Howard Enstedt, Chuck Erbe, Alix Klineman, Bob Samuelson, Krista Vansant Hendrickson; Lifetime: Rocky Ciarelli & Marc 'Cubby' Jacobs.
