COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"One of the reasons we're playing these international matches so early is that we're playing a good team that's really going to challenge us. We'll learn a lot from this match and it will give us something other than practice on what we need to work on. I'm happy that we won against a good team, but I'm most pleased with the opportunity to get better in some areas and this match showed that."
SET 1
The Matadors jumped out to a 9-4 lead, forcing an early Guelph timeout. An ensuing 6-1 run by the visitors knotted the score at 10-10 and neither team would lead by more than two points until a Rotter kill opened up a 19-16 Matador lead. Another Rotter kill maintained a three-point CSUN lead (21-18) forcing a second and final timeout for the Gryphons. The Matadors would not trail again as they cashed in their second set point following a Guelph service error.Â
SET 2
Wetter gave CSUN an early 6-3 lead with an ace before the Gryphons claimed eight of the next 10 points to force a Matador timeout at 11-8. CSUN trailed by as many as five (17-12) when Rotter's attack went wide and the Matadors called their final timeout. Three straight CSUN points, capped by a Krzmarzick kill, cut the lead to 17-15. The Matadors eventually tied the score at 21-21 following a Guelph hitting error and the score would be tied seven more times before the Gryphons cashed in their fifth set point to take the set 30-28.
