Matadors Notch First Home Win in Straight Sets Over Cal Lutheran
1/25/2020 9:20:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sophomore Daniel Wetter continued his torrid hitting, putting down a match-high 14 kills as the CSUN Matadors picked up a straight-set victory over Cal Lutheran in a non-conference match Saturday night at The Matadome.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 as CSUN snapped a three-match skid to improve to 2-5 on the season. The match was an exhibition for the visiting Kingsmen.
KEY STATISTICS
• Wetter, who came into the week leading the nation in hitting, finished the night with 14 kills on 17 errorless swings to hit .824. The sophomore from Camarillo, who upped his season hitting clip to .635, also set a career-high with three aces to go with one block.
• Junior Maciej Ptaszynski (.188) and redshirt freshman Kyle Hobus (.087) each chipped in seven kills while Ptaszynski matched his career-high with four aces along with two digs and two blocks. Freshman Griffin Walters added five kills and three digs while serving a season-high three aces.
• Sophomore setter Taylor Ittner had an impressive all-around performance with 35 assists, a career-high six kills (.455), seven digs and one ace.
• The Matadors hit a season-high .353 (42-12-85) and added a season-high 13 aces which ranks sixth in CSUN history for a single match.
• Andrew McFarlane came off the bench to lead Cal Lutheran with six kills (.364) as the Kingsmen hit .236 (27-10-72) as a team.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"(Daniel) Wetter has been amazing and tonight was one of those all-time performances. We were much tougher from the service line tonight which gave us some leads in each of the three sets. We're still settling on a lineup and it's going to take some time for these guys to gel together. We've got two tough matches coming up and we''ll be better next week than we were this week."
SET 1
The opening set was tight throughout and neither team led by more than two points until the Matadors scored three straight points to snap an 18-18 tie. After Cal Lutheran scored twice to cut the CSUN lead to 21-20, the Matadors used a Kingsmen service error and a Walters ace to push the lead back to three at 23-20. After each team sided-out, CSUN cashed in its second set point when Hobus connected for a kill off an Ittner set.
SET 2
After the visitors took a 3-2 lead to open the second set, the Matadors rolled off five straight points - the last two coming on Wetter aces - as CSUN opened up a 7-3 lead. Cal Lutheran cut the lead to two on a pair of occasions before an Ittner kill pushed the Matador lead back to four at 12-8. The Kingsmen then took advantage of three straight CSUN hitting errors to knot the score at 12-12. Undeterred, the Matadors outscored Cal Lutheran 5-1 over the next six points to lead 17-13. The Kingsmen would get as close as three before CSUN closed the set on a 6-1 run to take a 25-18 win.
SET 3
With the score tied at five, Cal Lutheran rolled off three straight to open up an 8-5 cushion. Kills by Ittner and Wetter trimmed the deficit to 9-7 before a Kingsmen kill kept the margin at three (10-7). An ensuing kill by Wetter then fueled a 7-1 CSUN run that erased the lead and put the Matadors in front 14-11. The visitors remained within one at 14-13 when a 4-1 CSUN run gave the Matadors the margin they needed at 18-14. Three points would be as close as Cal Lutheran would get down the stretch as CSUN pulled away for its first home win, 25-19.
UP NEXT
The Matadors conclude a season-long six-match homestand next week as CSUN welcomes USC and No. 13 Princeton to The Matadome next Friday and Saturday.
