Complete All-Big West Conference Team
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---For the second consecutive season, sophomore Lamine Diane has been named Big West Player of the Year, the league office announced on Monday. CSUN Men's Basketball's top scoring duo of Diane and junior Terrell Gomez also collected All-Big West First Team recognition for the second-straight year after helping the Matadors post their best conference finish in 11 seasons.
In what would be another banner season for the Senegal native, Diane once again averaged a double-double as he posted 25.6 points and 10.2 rebounds in 19 games. His averages would make Diane the second player in the history of the Big West Conference to lead the league in both categories in two-straight seasons but he has not played in the minimum of games required (66.7 percent of team's games). He would also be third in the nation in scoring. Despite that, Diane still led the Big West in double-doubles for the second-straight year (11) and posted seven 30-point efforts. Diane posted new career highs in points per game, assists per game (2.8), steals per game (1.7) and free throw percentage (66.3) while he shot 48.0 percent from the field and blocked 2.0 shots per game.
Diane averaged a league-leading 24.2 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game in Big West play. He collected nine double-doubles against league foes and scored 20 or more points in nine games.
In just 52 games played, Diane has already made his way up several of the Matadors' all-time career categories. Earlier this season, he became the fastest player to reach 1,000 career points (40 games). Currently ninth in team history in points scored (1,304), Diane is also second in blocks (110), fourth in double-doubles (31) and sixth in field goals made (516). He is the eighth individual to earn Big West Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons and the first CSUN player to accomplish the feat.
Earning his second-straight first team selection, Gomez led the Big West in a number of categories in his junior campaign. He averaged a career-high 19.8 points, which qualified him for first place in the Big West. Gomez also led the league in field goals made (207), 3-point field goals made (111) and free throw percentage (94.8), In fact, Gomez led the nation in free throw percentage as he missed just six attempts all season (109-of-115). Gomez also ranks fifth in all of Division I basketball in 3-point field goals made, sixth in 3-point field goals per game (3.47), eighth in 3-point percentage (44.0) and 20th in total points (634).
Gomez scored in double figures in 31 of 32 games this season including scoring 20 or more points 15 times. He also topped the 30-point mark three times, capped by a career-high 33 points against Pepperdine on Nov. 12. In Big West play, Gomez averaged 18.4 points and shot 52.9 percent from 3-point range. He also made 55-of-57 from the free throw line (96.5 percent) in league action.
Another regular in the Matador record book, Gomez is the all-time career 3-point field goals made leader (293) while he is fourth in points (1,637) and field goals made (542) and seventh in games started (96) and minutes played (3,492). His 293 career 3-pointers also rank fifth in Big West history. Gomez is rapidly approaching breaking his own single-season 3-point mark he set last year (117) as he has 111 this season.
Both Diane and Gomez are the first two-time All-Big West First Team selections in CSUN history.
The No. 2 seed Matadors open up the Big West Tournament on Thursday against No. 7 seed Cal State Fullerton at noon. The game will broadcast on ESPN3 while Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call at 11:50 a.m. at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
