CSUN Cross Country Wraps up 2021 at NCAA West Regional

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—For the first time since 2018, the CSUN Men's and Women's Cross Country teams competed in the NCAA Division I West Regional Friday morning. The meet was hosted by Sacramento State and run on the Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
MEN'S RECAP
Redshirt freshman Quinn Garity was the top finishing Matador. Garity ran a 10k time of 32:12.2. to finish 107th overall and was credited with 106th place points. His time was the fourth-fastest by a CSUN runner on a 10k course since 2000.
Daniel Rodriguez recorded a time of 32:19.3 which is the sixth-fastest 10k time by a CSUN runner since 2000. He was 113th overall, receiving 112th place points. Washington's Kieran Lumb took home the individual honors after going 29:28.5.
As a team, CSUN finished 26th (690), the best team showing for the Matadors at the West Regional since 2006 when CSUN placed 23rd. Stanford (61) was the team winner.
"I am proud of the way our team competed today," said CSUN head coach Justin Johnson. "This was our first 10k for the group and they all ran very close to what we believed we were capable of. The progress that the team has made this year provides a lot of excitement for the future."

WOMEN'S RECAP
Redshirt freshman Leann Hamilton recorded the top CSUN time as she ran 24:53.1 over the 6k course. She placed 226th and was credited with 224th place points. Stanford's Julia Heymach (20:01.1) was the individual champion. As a team, the Matadors finished 35th (1137). Stanford (42) was the team champion.
"I am very pleased with the effort our team made today," Johnson said. "They did a great job of staying engaged throughout the competition. We raced against some of the best teams in the country and they competed to the best of their ability. The team did a great job all season, pushing each other to be better and they continued to do that today. This culture is a great building block for years to come. I wanted to give a special thanks to Elizabeth Silengo who ran her last cross country race for CSUN today. Elizabeth has been a constant for our program and has always put forth her best effort day in and day out."
