CSUN Baseball Announces 40-Game Conference Only Schedule in 2021

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---The CSUN Baseball team announced today it will play a 40-game conference only schedule starting on March 20.
"With our program unfortunately not having fall workouts and with our return pushed back, the CSUN administration and I came to the conclusion in the best interest of our baseball program not to have a non-conference slate," said head coach Dave Serrano. "The extra time allows our student-athletes the best opportunity to prepare for a season and not put their health, safety and welfare in jeopardy."
Over 10 weekends, the Matadors will play four-game series throughout the season with a doubleheader slated for the middle day over three days.
"As much as we want to compete and play games against non-conference competition, the health of our student-athletes will always be our top priority," added Serrano. "We will work hard to catch up with our competitors who have been practicing for a while, yet we will not use this as an excuse in any way shape or form. I have confidence in our team that we will be ready to go when they say play ball."
CSUN opens the 2021 season against Cal Poly at Matador Field from March 20-22 before closing the month of March with a weekend set at Long Beach State (March 26-28).
The Matadors will play 12 of 17 games in April inside the friendly confines of Matador Field. The month begins with a home series against UC Irvine (April 2-4). After a weekend series at 2019 Big West champion UC Santa Barbara (April 9-11), CSUN hosts UC Riverside (April 16-18) and Cal State Fullerton (April 23-25) on back-to-back weekends.
In a road-heavy final month of the season, the Matadors travel to CSU Bakersfield (April 30-May 2), UC Davis (May 7-9) and UC San Diego (May 28-30). CSUN will host Hawai'i in its final home series of the season from May 14-16.
Serrano completed his first year as head coach of the Matadors in 2020. He helped lead the Matadors to their first 7-0 start in 27 years. In CSUN history, only three teams have ever started a season with seven-straight wins and only one Division I team, the 1993 squad, won more games in a row to begin a year with nine.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 baseball season last spring, leaving the Matadors with only 15 games completed. CSUN finished the shortened year with the second-best record in the Big West Conference at 10-5.
The Matadors return an experienced group in 2021 with 21 letterwinners and 26 upperclassmen. A total of 10 position players, who started six or more games, return as well as three weekend starting pitchers. Seven of the Matadors' 10 seniors from 2020 have also returned to the program for the 2021 campaign. In addition, CSUN has added 19 newcomers to its roster.
