CSUN Softball Announces 24-Game Conference Only Schedule
2/11/2021 11:55:00 AM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN head softball coach Charlotte Morgan has announced the 2021 Matadors' 24-game Big West Conference only schedule.
"We are looking forward to competing and getting on the field as a team," Morgan said. "With a lack of Fall workouts and a delayed return, we came to the conclusion with the support of our administration that it was in the best interests of the team not to play non-conference games. This will give our players the best opportunity to compete. We will use this season to establish the ground work for our program and grow everyday as a family."
The action gets underway Mar. 21 when CSUN travels to Cal Poly for series that will conclude on Mar. 22. The opening home series will be Mar. 26-27 when Hawai'i travels to Northridge. The Matadors remain home Apr. 2-3 when CSUN welcomes Long Beach State to town.
The Matadors then hit the road Apr. 9-10 when CSUN heads to Cal State Fullerton. UC Davis comes to CSUN on Apr. 16-17 followed by a three-game set at UC Riverside Apr. 24-25. After a bye week created by CSU Bakersfield opting out of the 2021 campaign, the Matadors travel to UC San Diego for a May 7-8 series. CSUN and UCSD, the other Big West newcomer, are playing softball for the first time since 1990. The regular season concludes May 14-15 when the Matadors host UC Santa Barbara.
On Jan. 29, the Big West Conference announced the establishment of 2021 return to play and scheduling protocols in the sports of baseball, softball, men's volleyball and women's water polo.
Big West softball teams will have a three-game series during conference play. Schools are permitted to add a fourth game to the series which would be designated as a non-conference game. CSUN will concentrate only on the three-game conference series in 2021.
As in baseball, teams are only permitted to play one opponent per week during the conference season and are prohibited from participating in any midweek contests during that time. Play will begin on Friday, March 19 and run through Saturday, May 15, 2021. All institutions will continue adherence to medical and COVID-19 testing protocols established by the Big West Conference based on CDC, NCAA, federal, state and local guidelines.
A former All-American at Alabama, Morgan begins her first season at the helm of the CSUN softball program with 17 players on the roster, seven of which are returning letter winners. The Matadors will be led by Kenedee Jamerson. The senior lefty was 8-2 in the circle during the abbreviated 2020 season while hitting .269 at the plate. Jaymi Steward is the top returning hitter for the Matadors. She posted a .355 batting average with four home runs and 17 RBI in 2020.
