UCSD Tops Matadors in Four Sets in Outrigger Big West Tournament
4/23/2021 12:27:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
HONOLULU, O'ahu - CSUN's Daniel Wetter put down a career-high 18 kills but No. 4 seed UC San Diego came back to win the final three sets to defeat the 5th-seeded Matadors, 20-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 in a first round match at the Outrigger Big West Championship Thursday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
CSUN ends its season at 2-9 while the Tritons improve to 4-12. UCSD will take on top-seed Hawai'i in a semifinal match on Friday while No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara takes on No. 3 seed Long Beach State in Friday's other semifinal.
KEY STATISTICS
• Wetter, a first team All-Big West selection, hit .567 on 30 attacks which eclipsed his previous career-high of 29. He also had two blocks and one ace to account for a team-high 20 points.
• Ryan DeWeese also had a solid night offensively, knocking down a season-high 13 kills on 35 swings to hit .286. DeWeese added a season-high nine digs and a pair of blocks.
• Cole Chea (.312) and Griffin Walters (.115) added seven and six kills respectively while Chea added a team-high four blocks and Walters had six digs. Senior Maciej Ptaszynski set a new career-high with 16 digs in his final collegiate match while adding four aces and one kill.
• CSUN setter Kyle Merchen recorded 39 assists, two kills and eight digs while libero Johnny Anselmo notched nine digs in the loss.Â
• UCSD hit .269 (55-19-134) to CSUN's .228 (47-18-127) as Kyle McCauley matched Wetter with 18 kills (.204). Ryan Ka also reached double figures in kills for the Tritons with 17 on .286 hitting.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"We played hard and left it all out on the floor tonight. I want to give San Diego credit, one of the reasons we struggled at times was because of their serving. In the two sets that we lost by two points, they served tough and caused us problems which enabled them to go on big runs. Volleyball is such a game of runs and momentum and we felt like we had some momentum and could win the match and it was just that little run there at the end with McCauley serving that made the difference."
SET 1
Wetter had five kills in the early going as neither team led by more than two points at the mandatory media timeout. Trailing 15-14 out of the break, CSUN scored four straight points, the final coming on a DeWeese kill, to open up an 18-15 lead. The Matadors maintained a three-point cushion at 20-17 following a Chea kill when two straight points by the Tritons cut the lead to one. Ptaszynski's only kill of match pushed the lead back to two (21-19) before a DeWeese service error again trimmed the lead to one at 21-20. Wetter's sixth kill of the set fueled a 4-0 set-clinching run by the Matadors who took the opening set 25-20.
SET 2
The Matadors, who hit a robust .412 in set one, dropped the second set by just two (25-23) despite hitting at a .132 clip. CSUN held a pair of two-point leads at 5-3 and again at 10-8 before UCSD outscored the Matadors 6-1 over the next seven points to open up a 14-11 advantage. CSUN got a triple block from Merchen, Ptaszynski and Wetter out of a Matador timeout to pull within two. The Matadors could not overcome a two-point deficit until a Ptaszynski ace forced a Triton timeout at 20-19. CSUN eventually drew even at 21-21 when Chea and Walters stuffed a UCSD attack but the Tritons responded with three straight kills to set up set point at 24-21. Consecutive kills by DeWeese saved two set points before a UCSD kill ended the set 25-23.Â
 Â
SET 3
The third set was all UCSD as the Tritons used an 8-1 run to snap an early 4-4 tie. UCSD would lead by as many as 10 at 17-7 before the Matadors took advantage of a pair of Triton hitting errors to pull within five at 18-13. But three straight UCSD points boosted the lead back to eight at 21-13 and the Tritons took the set goiing away 25-16.

SET 4
UCSD claimed eight of the first 11 points of the final set, forcing a Matador timeout at 8-3. Back-to-back kills by Wetter propelled CSUN on an 8-3 run which forced a Triton timeout with the Matadors on top 11-10. The lead changed hands twice before a pair of UCSD miscues opened up an 18-16 lead for CSUN. But an ensuing 4-0 run by the Tritons saw the lead change hands yet again. Trailing 20-18, the Matadors scored four straight to lead 22-20. Leading 23-21 following a Chea kill, the Matadors saw the Tritons score the final four points of the match, the last coming on a McCauley service ace to seal the 25-23 win.
