NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Interim head coach Trent Johnson has announced the addition of James Covell as the Matadors' interim director of operations for the 2021-22 season.
Â
"We are excited to add James to the staff," said Johnson. "James is an energetic person who brings youthful experience and passion. He is extremely bright to the position and he is a workaholic."
Â
Covell previously spent three seasons at Division III Caltech from 2018-21 as an assistant coach. With the Beavers, Covell worked as the team's recruiting coordinator and played a major role in practice and game preparation, video analysis, scouting and coaching.
Â
With Covell on the sidelines, Caltech broke a number of single-game, single-season and team records. He also helped the team post its first winning season in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 66 seasons in 2019-20.
Â
Covell also worked over the 2021 summer with West Coast Elite's Valley and Los Angeles branches. Prior to Caltech, Covell spent two seasons as an assistant coach at California Miramar University from 2016-18.
Â
He played college basketball at the University of Saint Katherine and graduated with a degree in Business Management in 2015. Covell earned his master's in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia-Irvine in 2019.
Â
"I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to join coach Johnson's staff," said Covell. "Growing up in Santa Barbara, I would watch coach Johnson's Nevada teams play at the Thunderdome, and now I'm on the staff with him."
Â
Covell attended La Canada High School and graduated in 2010.
