NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN's Giovanni Aguilar was selected in the second round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Jan. 11.
Aguilar was selected first-team All-Conference in 2021. He tied with Jamar Ricketts for the team lead in goals with three. He led the team and was 15th in the Big West in assists (3) and paced the Matadors in points with nine and was 20th in the conference in points per game in 2021. Aguilar took 19 shots and played 1,483 of a possible 1,654 minutes during the season. A fifth-year student, Aguilar was named honorable mention All-Conference as a freshman and as a sophomore. He was a member of the 2017 Big West All-Freshman team.
"Gio is a super industrious midfielder who can play both sides of the ball," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "He will go down as one of the all-time great CSUN midfielders who have gone onto play in the MLS. Gio has a long way to go to catch Rafael Garcia who won two MLS Championship rings with the LA Galaxy. But Gio's best is yet to come."
Aguilar's selection follows Daniel Trejo's in the first round of the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by the LA Galaxy. He is the 10th Matador to be taken in the MLS SuperDraft, the 14th in any MLS Draft since 2000, and 16th Matador to be drafted by an MLS club since the SuperDraft was created in 1996.
