OREM, Utah --- The CSUN men's soccer team (6-6-2, 1-2-1 Big West) fell to the Utah Valley Wolverines by a score of 1-0, Saturday night at UCCU Stadium. It was the first time the Matadors failed to score a goal in a game since Sept. 17 versus San Jose State. CSUN had 10 shots on the game, three of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Bryan Castaneda made three saves.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UVU put the pressure on early, getting a shot on goal in the first 30 seconds. Dan McKay had a shot before the seats were warm, right into the bottom center of the net, but it was saved by Castaneda.Â
Â
The Wolverines kept putting the Matadors in the hot seat, generating three corner kicks in the first seven minutes, but were unable to go ahead. UVU had another shot on goal in the ninth minute, this time by one of its top scorers in Nil Grau, as he slotted an attempt into the top center of the net, but Castaneda prevented the go-ahead goal once again.
Â
Grau had another try in the 25th minute, this time saved again on the bottom-right side of the net.Â
Â
In the 27th minute, Trevor Walk had an interception in CSUN's attacking half, pushing the ball up the field. He played give-and-go with Adem Arous, who passed the ball back to him at the top of the box. As Castaneda dove to get the save, Walk got his foot on the ball before the keeper was able to get his hands on it, as the ball went past Castaneda and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Wolverines kept the Matadors at bay for most of the half, but CSUN had one of its best chances in the 36th minute.
Â
Dave-Ryan Tankou was on the receiving end of a Damien Baltierra free kick. Tankou had a header attempt, but the ball went right into the goalkeeper's arms. CSUN had five shots in the first half, but only one on goal.
Â
In the second half, it was a defensive battle, with no shots on goal on either side until the 65th minute. Dominik Wicks had a long cross from the left side of the field into a header attempt by Daniel Garcia, but yet again it was right into the hands of the goalkeeper.Â
Â
Two minutes later, Baltierra broke through from the defender on a pass from Garcia. Baltierra was inches away from tying the game, as his shot hit the left post in what ended up being CSUN's best chance.
Â
The Matadors had one more chance in the 88th minute, but Garcia's shot was blocked. The UVU defense held its stance and held on for the win.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"We're disappointed with the result, but we showed important positive signs on the road against a quality opponent. We'll take the lessons from this game, build on the strengths we demonstrated, and use them to move forward with confidence."
