11/15/2022 9:21:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (1-2) dropped a 62-55 decision at California Baptist on Tuesday at CBU Events Center. Atin Wright led all scorers with 16 points to go with three rebounds and two steals while Dionte Bostick finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Matadors trimmed a nine-point second-half deficit to two with less than three minutes to play but the Lancers scored the final five points to close the game.
Â
CBU held a 4-3 edge at the outset of the game before CSUN stormed out in front by 10 points. Fidelis Okereke would make back-to-back baskets then Marcel Stevens followed with a 3-pointer to close an 11-0 run. The Matadors forced the Lancers to seven consecutive missed shots during the first half as CSUN led by as many as 13 points.
Â
CSUN continued to lead by double digits due in large part to the play of its backcourt. Bostick scored 10 first-half points while Wright chipped in with seven in the stanza.
CBU though battled back with a 10-0 run run beginning near the five-minute mark of the first half. During the stretch, CSUN missed four-straight shots and committed two turnovers. CBU made six of its seven 3-pointers on the night in the second half while CSUN would convert on just one attempt in the period.
Later in the half, Reed Nottage and Quintana would hit consecutive treys to quickly give the Lancers a 48-40 lead at the nine-minute mark. CSUN trailed by as many as nine points, but chipped away at the lead over the final minutes of the game. The Matadors scored six unanswered points, four of which scored by Wright to pull to within 57-55 with 2:22 left to play. After CBU pushed the lead to three on a free throw, CSUN had an opportunity to square the game when Bostick and Wright missed 3-pointers on the next possession.
With less than two minutes to play, Quintana came away with a crucial basket to extend the Lancer lead to five. On the ensuing possession, CSUN committed a costly turnover, giving CBU an opportunity to seal the game at the free throw line.

GAME NOTES
CSUN shot 41.8 percent from the field but made just 3-of-17 from 3-point range. On the flip side, CBU would shoot 35.5 percent for the game and connect on 7-of-26 from downtown. The Lancers made 11-of-19 at the free throw line compared to the Matadors who hit 6-of-8. CBU held a slight 40-39 edge in rebounding.

ACCORDING TO COACH TRENT JOHNSON
"I thought we played extremely hard from start to finish. Obviously, we were against a team that's experienced and puts pressure on your defense because they pass it and shoot it so well. We had some breakdowns at crucial times before the half. Then we had some crucial breakdowns at the start of the second half.
We've just got to get better sooner or later with coming in with a sense of urgency [off the bench]. I can point to three or four different scenarios where we lose a man for a three in the corner or a guy comes off the bench and fouls a three-point shooter. Against good teams and experienced teams, they capitalize and put you behind the eight-ball."
