FORÂ STARTERS
The CSUN women's volleyball team (7-17, 2-10 Big West) opens the final month of the season this week as the Matadors travel to Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield for a pair of Big West contests. CSUN begins the brief two-match trip Friday against the Mustangs (12-10, 9-3) at Mott Athletics Center before capping the weekend against the Roadrunners (5-19, 2-10) at Icardo Center Saturday at 5 p.m.
The Matadors. who dropped home matches to UC San Diego (3-0) and UC Irvine (3-2) at home last week, are looking to snap a five-match winless streak dating back to a five-set win over UC Davis on Oct. 14.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Cal Poly (12-10, 9-3 Big West) returns home this week after four straight road matches that saw the Mustangs finish 2-2 on the road swing with wins over UC San Diego and Cal State Fullerton and losses to UC Irvine and Long Beach State. Cal Poly is currently tied for third in the Big West standings, one game behind UCSB and two games behind conference-leading Hawai'i.
Series: Friday's match is the 68th meeting all-time between CSUN and Cal Poly with the Mustangs holding a 38-29 lead in the series. Cal Poly won this season's first meeting in four sets in Northridge (Oct. 1). The Matadors are 13-18 all-time in 31 matches between the two teams in San Luis Obispo.
CSU Bakersfield (5-19, 2-10 Big West) hosts UC Santa Barbara on Friday before taking on the Matadors Saturday at 5 p.m. The Roadrunners are in the midst of a stretch of matches that has them on the road for eight of 10. Bakersfield is looking to snap a six-match skid with three of those losses coming in five sets. Senior Emma Erteltova has averaged 0.94 blocks per set over the last six matches.
Series: Saturday's match is the 43rd meeting all-time between CSUN and CSU Bakersfield with the Matadors holding a 33-9 advantage in the series. CSUN, which swept the first meeting this season in Northridge (Sept. 30), is 13-4 all-time against the Runners in Bakersfield.
NEVAREZ 14TH CSUN PLAYER WITH 1,000 KILLS
With the ninth kill of her 13-kill effort against UC Irvine on Saturday, senior Nicole Nevarez became the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. With 17 kills in two matches last week, Nevarez moved into 13th place on the all-time CSUN kills list with 1,008. She passed Ana Khristich who had 1,004 kills from 1991-94 and now sets her sights on Nancy Ma (1,030) and 12th place. With a team-high 247 kills this season, Nevarez heads into Friday's match having appeared in 108 matches and 407 career sets while posting 1,008 career kills on 3,081 career attempts to go with 785 career digs, 190 career blocks and 70 career aces. Last week, she moved into the CSUN all-time top-10 in career attacks (10th) and recently moved into the CSUN Rally Scoring era top-10 in a pair of categories, she is currently seventh in attacks and eighth in kills. Her best season offensively was in 2019 when she connected for 285 kills while she set a season-high for digs with 245 in 2021. This season, Nevarez is hitting a season-high .209 on a team-high 767 swings.

BARRON ADDS A FOURTH TRIPLE-DOUBLESÂ IN 2022Â
After posting her first career triple-double in CSUN's five-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16, Carisa Barron added back-to-back triple-double efforts against UC Davis and UC Riverside (Oct. 14-15) before notching her fourth of the season against UC Irvine on Saturday. Barron, who was named Big West Setter of the Week on Sept. 19 after notching CSUN's first triple-double since 2007, posted 14 kills, 27 assists and 12 digs against the Anteaters. Barron, who has emerged as one of CSUN's top offensive threats this season, ranks third on the Matadors with 181 kills (1.93 kps) while also averaging a team-high 5.24 assists per set and 2.14 digs per set. With 530 attacks this season, she has taken the most swings from the setter spot since Sydney Gedryn had 406 attacks in 2012.
MATADOR QUICK SETS
Freshman Breanna Mitchell notched the first double-double of her career against UC Irvine with 13 digs and a season-high 10 assists ... Playing in her eighth match of the season, freshman Kathy Porter put down her first collegiate kill against UC San Diego on Friday ... the Matadors slipped to 2-5 at Premier America Credit Union Arena with losses to UC San Diego and UC Irvine last week. CSUN has home matches still remaining against Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 11), Long Beach State (Nov. 12) and Hawai'i (Nov. 26) ... Saturday marks a return to Bakersfield for John Price who was the head coach of the Roadrunner volleyball program from 1994-2008.
PRICE NAMED CSUN'SÂ DIRECTOR OF WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
John Price was named Director of Women's Volleyball at CSUN in June of 2022. He will oversee both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. Price returned to the CSUN indoor program in 2021 where he served as an assistant on interim head coach Susie Terrusa's staff. Price previously as an assistant coach on Jeff Stork's women's volleyball coaching staff from 2012-2015. He also served one season as the head coach of the CSUN women's volleyball team in 1993, compiling a record of 12-17 as an NCAA Independent.
Price's CSUN resume also includes 12 seasons as the head coach of the nationally-ranked Matador men's volleyball team (1986-1997) where he amassed an overall record of 194-158 (.551) leading CSUN to a 23-10 record and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Championship match where the Matadors fell to UCLA. Price then moved on to CSU Bakersfield women's volleyball and remains the winningest coach in program history. He posted a career record of 232-169 (.579) over 14 seasons, leading the Roadrunners to a 28-4 overall record in his first season. Price was also at the helm of the CSUB program when the school made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Price's 2008 squad was the first Roadrunner team in any sport to post a winning record (18-15) in the school's Division I era.
LOOKING AHEAD
After a two-match trip to the Central Valley this week, the Matadors return home to host Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 11-12).
