CSUN Forces Extras but Falls in 13 Innings at #22 UCLA
2/20/2022 8:50:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (1-2) scored three runs in the ninth to force extra innings but No. 22 UCLA would prevail in 13 innings, 5-3, on Sunday at Matador Field. Andrew Sojka hit a game-tying three-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning while Ali Camarillo finished 2-for-5 at the plate. The Matadors' bullpen combined to toss 7.2 innings on the day.
The Matadors were held to three hits through the first eight innings when they took the plate in the ninth inning. UCLA pitching had retired 20 of 21 Matador batters before Mason Le worked a leadoff walk in the ninth. Le was also the Matadors' first leadoff batter to reach base up to that point. Camarillo would sacrifice Le to second then Kai Moody battled to a 3-2 count before drawing a walk as well.
The Matadors, who had not recorded a hit since the third inning, turned to Sojka with the game on the line. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Sojka hammered a three-run shot over the right-center field wall to even the game up.
With new life, the Matadors turned to Friday starter Blaine Traxel to keep the Bruins at bay. Traxel would retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two, before stranding two Bruin runners on the base paths in the 10th.
CSUN's best scoring chance came in the 10th inning when Le reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error on the play. Le later advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Camarillo but would be stranded there when Moody lined out and Sojka struck out.
Lucas Braun came out of the bullpen and gave the Matadors two shutout innings but would have to work out of trouble in each frame. He allowed two runners to reach in the 11th before inducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Braun again escaped danger when he struck out Tommy Beres with the bases loaded in the 12th.
However, the Bruins finally came away with the biggest hit of the game in the bottom of the 13th. After Kenny Oyama singled, Ethan Gourson hit a walk-off home run to left field to clinch a series win for the Bruins.
Â
Earlier in the game, the Matadors received solid work from starter Ryan Wentz who pitched into the fifth inning and scattered four hits. Wentz though committed a costly error on a failed pickoff attempt in the first inning, which would lead to an RBI single from Jake Palmer.
Wentz stranded four Bruins on base before UCLA scratched across another tally in the fifth. Two CSUN errors led to the single run coming across as Oyama touched home plate on a throwing error from Sebastian Garcia. UCLA added to its lead in the sixth on an RBI single from Malakhi Knight.
CSUN was frustrated at the plate over the first eight innings by stingy UCLA pitching. Starter Kelly Austin allowed three hits over six shutout innings while racking up eight strikeouts. Thatcher Hurd also worked two clean frames to help keep CSUN off the scoreboard.
Â
On the flip side, the Matador bullpen worked nearly eight innings in the contest. The trio of Gavin Lizik, Xavier Martinez and Sebastian Granados combined to toss 2.2 shutout innings to help keep CSUN within striking distance. Elias Jauregui also worked an inning while Traxel and Braun worked two innings.
GAME NOTES
Wentz finished with 4.1 innings of work, allowing two runs with one run earned to go with three strikeouts. Making his collegiate debut, Martinez tossed 1.1 shutout innings with two strikeouts. Granados made his CSUN debut out of the bullpen as well, striking out the only batter he faced. Graysen Tarlow and Matt Thomas also played in their first CSUN game off the bench and had an at-bat piece.

ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I think the Bruins played tremendous baseball through eight innings. I said to the team that Xavier Martinez coming in as a true freshman and the performance he gave for an inning and two-thirds kind of got the momentum back to our team. Everyone was excited for him and got our momentum going for the ninth when Sojka hit the big three-run home run. We come into every series wanting to win. We didn't win the weekend but we got better as a team this weekend."
