Sosa in Top-20, Matadors 10th After One Round at Islander Classic
2/21/2022 8:03:00 PM | Women's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Freshman Fernanda Sosa fired an opening round four-over 75 and is in the top-20 after the opening round of the Islander Classic Monday at Brackenridge Park Golf Course.
The second round was suspended due to darkness with CSUNÂ tied for 10th following a team round of 311 in the morning round.
Sosa was at even-par through seven holes after making birdie on two of her first five holes in the morning round. Four bogeys over her next seven holes dropped her to four-over before a final birdie and a bogey over the final two holes completed a four-over round of 75.
The Matadors posted a round one score of (+27) 311 which left them 10th out of 18 teams in the field. Hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi led after the opening round with a team score of six-over 290. The Islanders' Anastacia Johnson tied for the individual lead with Lindsey Hollis of Wofford at one-under 70.

COACH MICHELLE WINKLERÂ SAID
"Considering the condition of the course, I think we played fairly well. We played lift, clean, and place, and the back nine bunkers were out of play. The pace was extremely slow, which made it difficult for us to get into a groove. As the wind picked up during the day, we struggled a bit off the tee and missed a handful of birdie opportunities. Having said that, all of us recovered well during the second half of the day and are going into tomorrow with a positive and fierce mindset."
The remaining holes in the second round will be completed starting at 7:45 a.m. with the third and final round following the conclusion of round two. CSUN will be paired with Southern Illinois and Stephen F. Austin for the final round.
