Matadors Blank UC Riverside 5-0 to Clinch Series Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (17-15, 6-8 Big West) received six shutout innings from freshman Diego Gutierrez in a 6-0 win over UC Riverside (4-27, 2-12 Big West) on Friday at the Riverside Sports Complex. Andrew Sojka finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored along with a two doubles and a triple while Bart West went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Joey Kramer had a 3-for-4 day with an RBI. The win clinched the Matadors' third series win in conference play.
Friday's game began as a pitcher's duel with Gutierrez and UCR's Jeremiah Priddy trading zeroes on the mound.
Gutierrez allowed three hits through his first six innings of work and received timely defense along the way. In the first, Gutierrez surrendered a single and a walk but limited the damage by picking Andrew Rivas off first base.
Gutierrez would yield two doubles in the third inning, however, the combination of Sojka, Kai Moody and Sebastian Garcia tagged Jacob Badawi at home plate for the third out. Garcia also picked off Anthony Mata between second and third base in the bottom of the fourth. Over the middle innings, Gutierrez would retire seven-straight batters.
On the flip side, the Matadors stranded runners at the corners against Priddy in the first inning before being held to one hit over the next three innings.
CSUN though broke through in the fifth inning to break the scoreless tie. Garcia drew a walk to start the frame before moving up to second base on a Brandon Bohning sacrifice bunt. Garcia eventually scored on two consecutive wild pitches from Priddy. Sojka kept the inning alive with a two-out double then West folllowed with a pinch-hit RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.
After finally breaking through in the scoring column, the Matadors tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh in support of Gutierrez. Kevin Fitzer singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. An inning later, a Sojka triple and West double produced another run. Joey Kramer would pick up an RBI on an infield single that drove in a hustling Kai Moody from second base and gave the Matadors a 5-0 edge.
Gutierrez exited the game in the seventh inning after giving up a leadoff single to Mata. Blake Sodersten entered the fray and proceeded to retire the final two batters of the inning, keeping the Matadors' lead intact.
CSUN received quality pitching from Sodersten in his first relief outing of the season. The right-hander gave up a leadoff double in the eighth inning but bounced back to sit down the next three Highlander batters. He also worked a clean bottom of the ninth, needing just six pitches to finish off the game.
GAME NOTES
Sojka registered his team-leading 13th multiple-hit game of the season while also extending his on-base streak to 15 games. Kevin Fitzer made his first career start for the Matadors and went 1-for-4 with a run and a walk.
Gutierrez and Sodersten combined to allow just one walk on the night. CSUN pitching has shut out UC Riverside over the first 18 innings of the series. The Matadors have won five of the last seven games played at UC Riverside.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Another good performance from the mound tonight. Diego Gutierrez did a very good job of establishing his stuff early and he carried it late into the game. It was fabulous to see Blake Sodersten back to form in a relief stint to finish the game for us. Andrew Sojka had a very good night from the offensive side as did Bart West coming off the bench with three hits."
