Matadors Drop Season Finale to UCSD, 3-1
5/28/2022 4:31:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball dropped its season finale to UC San Diego 3-1 on Senior Day Saturday at Matador Field. Seven seniors made their final appearance for CSUN while head coach Dave Serrano ended his 34-year coaching career and third season with the Matadors.
CSUN jumped ahead in the first inning against the Tritons. Following back-to-back one-out singles from Ali Camarillo and Kai Moody that put runners at first and third base, Gabe Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to give CSUN a 1-0 lead.
Senior Blake Sodersten retired the side in order in the opening inning, but gave up a walk to Blake FitzGerald and an RBI double to Emiliano Gonzalez in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. Sodersten though struck out two batters in the frame while his batterymate CJ Yogi threw out Gonzalez trying to steal third base.
After Sodersten tossed a scoreless third, UCSD took its first lead of the series in the top of the fourth. The Tritons drew two walks in the frame before Michael Fuhrman broke the tie with a two-out RBI single to left-center field.
UCSD starter Zack Ernisse bounced back after the first inning to keep the Matadors' bats in check for the rest of his six innings of work. CSUN would threaten in the third when Andrew Sojka doubled and Ali Camarillo was hit by a pitch, but Moody grounded into an inning-ending double play. The Matadors also left two runners stranded in the fourth while they hit into a double play in the sixth.
The Tritons added to their lead in the top of the eighth on a leadoff home run from Jalen Smith. CSUN though looked to rally back in the bottom of the eighth against the UCSD bullpen. Sojka and Moody collected singles in the inning before Gonzalez battled back from a 0-2 count to draw a walk to load the bases with two outs. However, Bart West was retired by Ryan Rissas to end the threat.
Rissas would go on to retire the Matadors in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.
GAME NOTES
Prior to first pitch, the Matadors honored eight seniors including Gonzalez, Moody, Sodersten, West, Brandon Bohning, Kyle Hoskins, Blaine Traxel and Chad Wilson in a special ceremony. Coach Serrano was also honored for completing his outstanding coaching career.
Sodersten would throw a quality start in his final start with CSUN, tossing six innings with two runs allowed on three hits to go with five strikeouts. Hoskins also appeared in his final collegiate game, tossing 1.1 innings with a run allowed while Wilson worked an inning, striking out one in his last appearance. On the hitting side, Moody went 2-for-4 and Gonzalez had a walk along with an RBI.
Serrano finishes his head coaching career with a 509-348-1 record along with a 63-46 overall record with the Matadors.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I want to thank [the seniors]. As I just got done sharing with them, a 3-1 defeat doesn't indicate what this group did in helping establish and continuing to build this program. To win 32 games this year, as I said yesterday, to win seven out of 10 series and sweep four, finish higher than people expected us to finish, there's nothing to be ashamed of. It's a process and this program is growing in that process. As I shared, I was their coach, but from here on out, I'll always be a mentor and a friend to these guys whenever they need me. I love each and every one of them just like every person that wore the uniform. And these guys made me very proud of what we were able to accomplish together. There's wasn't one person more important than the other, [it was about] what we did together and that's how success comes. Thank you, to Dors nation for your support throughout this year. I thought your support was tremendous. It wasn't about the numbers, it was about the quality of the support all year. And I thank you for very much. Go Dors."
SEASON OUTLOOK
The Matadors finish the 2022 season with a 32-22 record and a 17-13 mark in the Big West. CSUN finishes tied for fourth place in the Big West standings with Long Beach State. This season, CSUN posted a winning conference record in back-to-back years for the first time since joining the Big West. The team's .567 conference winning percentage is the team's best since the 2002 season while the Matadors' 32 wins and .593 overall winning percentage are the program's best since 2016.
