NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – CSUN Athletics has announced that the contract of head softball coach Charlotte Morgan has been extended through the 2024 season.
"I'm very excited and honored to have the opportunity to continue to lead the softball program here at CSUN," Morgan said. "We have set high standards for where we want our program to be and have already made great progress to get there. I'm humbled that our administration has the trust in my ability to lead our program, they are behind us and that is what you want as a head coach. The future is bright for Matador softball and I'm so lucky to lead an amazing group of young women and staff."
Morgan recently completed her second season at the helm of the Matador program, leading CSUN to an 18-win improvement which ranked among the top-10 in NCAA Division I softball during the 2022 campaign. Jaymi Steward was selected first team All-Big West Conference while Kenedee Jamerson and Mikayla Carman earned second-team all-conference honors. Kaylee Escutia was chosen honorable mention all-conference while Carman and Escutia were named to the Big West All-Freshman team.
Morgan was named the seventh head coach in CSUN softball history on Dec. 7, 2020. In her first season, Morgan's Matadors played primarily a conference-only schedule in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. CSUN's efforts would result in two players; Jamerson and Steward earning honorable mention All-Big West honors.
"Charlotte has done an incredible job building up the softball team's culture on and off the field," said Shareef Amer, CSUN's Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Operations. "We are excited about the progress the team has made under her leadership and are thrilled to reward her with this well-deserved extension."
Morgan came to Northridge from UT Arlington where she was the pitching coach for two seasons. During the 2018 campaign, she helped the Mavericks to a 30-win season and helped guide Randi Phillips to All Sun-Belt Conference honors as a freshman. UTA's three-pitcher rotation helped the program to a top-four finish in the Sun Belt and an NISC Regional title. UT Arlington picked up wins against nationally-ranked teams Texas State, Louisiana, and Oklahoma State.
Morgan moved to UTA from Oklahoma State where she was the Cowgirls' pitching coach for two years. Under Morgan's leadership, the Oklahoma State pitchers shined down the stretch to help lead the Cowgirls back to the postseason for the first time since 2011. Senior Kacy Freeze finished with 19 wins, the fourth most in the Big 12, and four saves, the second-most in the conference.
Morgan took her first head coaching position while still on staff at Oklahoma State when she took the helm of the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch League in the Summer of 2017. She continued with the team in 2018 when the squad was rebranded the Cleveland Comets.
Before joining the Oklahoma State staff, Morgan was the pitching coach at Georgia Tech for two seasons. Under Morgan's guidance, Kylie Kleinschmidt posted a 2.77 ERA in 2014 while leading the team in complete games (20) and shutouts (three). In 2015, Morgan helped develop freshman Christina Biggerstaff into one of the ACC's most lethal young pitchers. Her 10.1 strikeouts per seven innings were seventh nationally. Also, in 2015, Kleinschmidt and Biggerstaff teamed up to toss combined no-hitters on consecutive days.
Morgan began her coaching career at Maryland when she served as pitching coach for the Terrapins who finished 34-22 and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2012. She also coached at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla., while also working for ESPN from 2011 through 2013 as a color commentator for SEC games and as an in-studio analyst.
As a player, the Moreno Valley, Calif. native was a three-time NFCA All-American for the University of Alabama. A two-time SEC Player of the Year and a three-time first-team All-Conference selection. She was a two-time USA Softball player of the year top 10 finalist and won the Senior Lowe's CLASS Award in 2010, which is awarded to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in 10 NCAA Division I sports. Morgan also earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors on three occasions including first-team honors as a senior. To date, Morgan is Alabama's only SEC Player of the Year selection.
In the circle at Alabama, Morgan pitched in 86 games with 65 starts and compiled a 51-12 overall record with a 2.12 ERA. At the plate, she posted a .387 batting average, 58 home runs, and a then SEC career-record 264 RBI. She led the Crimson Tide to appearances in the 2008 and 2009 Women's College World Series as the team went 219-40 over her playing career.
In Feb. 2010, Morgan was the overall first pick of the first National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft, going to the USSSA Pride. Morgan played for the Pride from 2010-12 before moving to the Akron Racers for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. She was all-NPF in 2010 and again in 2013.
