NORTHRIDGE, Calif---CSUN Baseball head coach Eddie Cornejo has announced the promotion of Elliot Surrey to pitching coach for the 2022-23 year.
Â
Surrey has spent the previous three seasons serving as the Matadors' director of baseball operations under Dave Serrano. With Surrey, the Matadors have posted three-straight winning seasons including finishing this past season with a 32-22 record and 17-13 conference mark.
Â
"I'm very excited to elevate Elliot Surrey to our coaching staff," said Cornejo. "Elliot was a self-made player in the Big West and in professional baseball. His organizational skills, work ethic and intelligence will make our program better, and no one will benefit more than our players. We are lucky to have him."
Â
No stranger to the pitching mound and the Big West, Surrey was a standout on the UC Irvine pitching staff from 2013-16. Surrey played for college coaching legend Mike Gillespie at UCI and was a three-year starting pitcher. Surrey helped lead the Anteaters to the College World Series in 2014, posting a 2.32 ERA over 112.2 innings. He also finished third in the nation with 18 games started.
Â
Surrey moved into the role of Friday starter over his final two seasons with UC Irvine. He completed his career with a 3.31 ERA and three complete game shutouts. After his senior season, Surrey earned All-Big West Second Team accolades.
Â
Surrey was drafted in the 26th round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Seattle Mariners. He went on to pitch in the Mariners organization for two years before suffering a career-ending injury. Surrey would complete his professional career with a 3.58 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 23 appearances.
Â
A La Crescenta native, Surrey played high school baseball for Crescenta Valley High School where he was a four-year varsity starter. He earned All-CIF First Team honors three years in a row during his prep career.
Â
"I'm really excited for the opportunity to be able to coach in the area that I grew up in," said Surrey. "I've been fortunate enough to have been around a lot of good baseball people in my life, and I can't wait to apply the knowledge I've gained to help these young men grow and develop."
Â
Surrey graduated from UC Irvine in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in Film and Media Studies.
