CSUN Adds Hassel and Gomez to Baseball Staff

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN head baseball coach Eddie Cornejo has finalized his staff for the 2022-23 year. Jeremy Hassel has been appointed director of baseball operations while Alex Gomez has joined the Matadors as director of player development.
Â
A CSUN alum, Hassel spent the past four seasons with the Matadors, beginning as a student-athlete and right-handed pitcher before completing his last season as a student assistant on the team.
"We are thrilled to have Jeremy back on our coaching staff this season," said Cornejo. "Jeremy's dedication to this program and university has been amazing. His understanding and work ethic will support our coaching staff tremendously."
Hassel emerged as one of the top right-handed arms on the Matadors' staff during his collegiate career. After suffering from a season-ending injury in his freshman season, Hassel made his Matador debut in the shortened 2020 season where he made two appearances.
In 2021, Hassel proved to be a steady arm both as a starter or as a relief pitcher. Out of the bullpen, Hassel posted a 2.92 ERA over 12 relief innings before he was moved into the starting rotation later in the season. There, Hassel racked up two wins in his new starting role, highlighted by a victory over Cal State Fullerton. Hassel worked a career-high six quality innings in a victory over CSU Bakersfield where he allowed just three hits. Hassel finished the 2021 season with a 4.18 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 22 appearances while he allowed a .212 average to opposing batters.
After injuries forced Hassel to step away from the playing field, he finished out his eligibility this past season assisting the Matadors' coaching staff as an undergraduate and primarily working with the team's pitchers in the bullpen.
Â
Prior to CSUN, Hassel played three seasons on the Tesoro High School baseball team and one year on the football team. Hassel collected first-team All-CIF and second-team All-County accolades in his senior season.
Â
Hassel graduated from CSUN this past spring with a degree in Management.Â
"I'm extremely excited for the opportunity to join the staff at CSUN," said Hassel. "Being able to come back to a program that I had the privilege of playing for and contribute to their future success is what I'd consider the best job in the world. I can't wait to see this team continue to grow and develop in the years to come."
A San Fernando Valley native, Gomez's duties with the Matadors this season include evaluating catchers, tech and analytics, video scouting and game planning, and assisting in other facets of the program.
"Alex was raised in the Valley and developed his knowledge of analytics in professional baseball," said Cornejo. "He will bring new ideas and help us modernize the way we operate so our players can benefit in their athletic development."
Gomez spent the 2021 season as a Sports Science Intern for the San Diego Padres where he assisted technology and data implementation, biomechanics analysis, and various on-field duties. Prior to joining the Padres, Gomez spent the abbreviated 2020 season as an Assistant Coach for the Glendale Community College baseball program.
He spent the 2019 spring season as a Minor League and International Operations Intern with the Tampa Bay Rays. In the fall of 2019, he led stadium operations at MLB's prestigious Arizona Fall League for the Mesa Solar Sox. He would also spend the 2018 season with the Chicago White Sox as a Player Development Intern and was NL bullpen catcher for MLB's 2016 All Star Game and 2017 World Baseball Classic with Team Venezuela (semifinal round).Â
Gomez lettered at John F. Kennedy High School where he was selected twice to All-Conference honors before graduating in 2013. He began his collegiate career at California Lutheran University but transferred to Glendale Community College after completing his freshman season. In his sophomore season at GCC, Gomez received Gold Glove and All-Conference honors before transferring to play baseball at the University of San Diego.
Gomez graduated in 2017 with a degree in English and recently completed his M.A. in English Studies from Arizona State University in May of 2022.   Â
"I am extremely excited to join the CSUN staff and transition into the college game. The San Fernando Valley is a special place to me, and I am excited to return home and serve my community in this new position. My family is full of Matadors, and I am thrilled to join this reputable university and baseball program that continues to provide opportunities for this diverse community. I want to thank Coach Cornejo and the rest of the staff for this opportunity. I look forward to getting to know and work with our student-athletes as we strive to bring a Big West Championship to CSUN Baseball."
