CSUN Continues Big West Play Hosting Fullerton, Traveling to UC Davis

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women' Soccer continues Big West play with a pair of tests this week. The Matadors (2-8, 0-1 Big West) host Cal State Fullerton on Thursday at 7 p.m. before visiting UC Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+. Ghizal Hasan has the call for Thursday's home match with the Titans.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors (2-8) wrapped up a busy fifth week of the season last week with a victory over Portland State on Sunday. CSUN's 2-0 win over Portland State was highlighted by a brace from Cindy Arteaga, the first of her career. Freshman Hayden Mauldin recorded six saves in front of the net en route to notching her first career shutout, the first by a CSUN goalkeeper this season. Kacie Garrity would pick up her second assist of the season while Izabel Reyes and Stevie Reynolds recorded their first assists in the win.
CSUN also opened up Big West play last Thursday with a 3-1 defeat at CSU Bakersfield. Arteaga would open the scoring on the night with a goal early in the match. CSUN held on to its lead until the 55th minute when the Roadrunners evened the match on a penalty kick. Bakersfield added goals in the 72nd and 83rd minute to put the game away. In defeat, Angelica Claiborne and Cassidy Imperial-Pham, who assisted Arteaga on her first-half goal, registered their first career points with CSUN.
MATADOR HEADLINES
After scoring four goals last week, Cindy Arteaga earned her first career Big West Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday. Arteaga's first strike would come in the 90th minute in a 2-1 loss to UC Irvine on Sept 12. After hitting the net once more versus CSUB, Arteaga posted the Matadors' first brace since 2019 (Alexis White) in the two-goal win over Portland State. Arteaga is the first CSUN player to earn a conference weekly award this season and the first Matador to be named Offensive Player of the Week since Marissa Favela in Sept. 2018.
Arteaga leads The Big West in shots (38) and shots on goal (18) heading into the week while she ranks second in goals (6) and third in points (12). Kacie Garrity is also ranked in ninth place in assists with her two helpers this season. On the saves list, Taylor Thames is in fourth place with 42 while Hayden Mauldin, who has started the last five matches, is in eighth with 28.
Arteaga can become just the 14th Matador in team history to score 10 career goals with one more strike. Her nine career goals are three off the pace of CSUN's top-10 list in school history. Arteaga is currently seventh in program history with 121 shots, one off the pace from sixth place occupied by Brittanie Sakajian (2010-14).
SERIES HISTORY
Cal State Fullerton leads CSUN 18-8-2 in the all-time series. The Titans have won the last three meetings, all of which at Titan Field, including last season's match 1-0. CSUN's last win took place in 2018 at Matador Soccer Field in come-from-behind fashion by a 2-1 score. Over the last three meetings at CSUN, the Matadors have gone 2-0-1 against the Titans.
CSUN holds an 8-7-3 edge over UC Davis in the all-time series. The Aggies have won the last three meetings in the series including last season's match by a 4-2 score at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN has gone winless against UC Davis over the last six meetings, going 0-3-3 in those matches. The Matadors' last win over the Aggies took place in 2014 in a 4-0 win at home, however, CSUN has not won at UC Davis since 2011 (3-1 win).
SCOUTING CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans fell to 3-3-3 on the season after falling to San Francisco 2-1 last Saturday. The team's three wins this season have come against UC Irvine (2-1), Utah (1-0) and Southern Utah (2-1). Fullerton has won two of three matches on the road this season with its only loss coming at UCLA. The Titans were picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Big West Coaches Poll. Head coach Demian Brown is in his 16th year with Fullerton.
Maddie Kline tops the team with seven points to go with two goals and three assists. Emelia Owen has a team-high three goals on the year while four others have scored goals. In front of the net, Mia Ranson has three shutouts to go with a 1.27 GAA and 50 saves. As a team, the Titans have the best save percentage in the Big West (.815).
SCOUTING UC DAVIS
The Aggies (3-4-2, 0-1) dropped two games on the road last week at Hawai'i and Arizona by 1-0 scores. UC Davis' three wins this season were against UTEP, Santa Clara and Oregon State. The team has gone 1-2-1 at Aggie Soccer Field this season. The Aggies were picked to finish in fifth place in the Big West by the conference's head coaches before the season. Head coach Tracy Hamm is in her fourth year with the Aggies.
A Preseason All-Big West selection, Leslie Fregoso tops the team with two goals, two assists and six points. Molly Branigan is second on the team with three points to go with a goal while six other Aggies have hit the net as well. Caeley Goldstein ranks in second place in the Big West with a 1.00 GAA. Goldstein has helped the Aggies allow the second-least goals in the Big West with nine.Â
