NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Cal State Fullerton in a Big West match on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. The Titans (4-3-3, 1-0 Big West) scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to break a 1-1 tie. Ashley Cruz notched her second goal of the season while Hayden Mauldin picked up seven saves in front of the net.
CSUN (2-9, 0-2 Big West) withstood three corner kicks form the Titans in the first three minutes of the game before connecting on its first attack of the game. In the 12th minute, Ashley Cruz drove the ball up the midfield before passing the ball to her left to a streaking Cindy Arteaga. Cruz would continue her run, finding a pass from Arteaga then going one-one-one with Fullerton goalkeeper Mia Ranson and eventually scoring on a right-footed shot.Â
Arteaga nearly doubled the Matadors' lead in the 17th minute on a loose ball after Jackie Victorio's initial shot was blocked. Arteaga picked up the bouncing ball in the box and gave a quick tapper toward the goal, but Ranson made a two-handed save.
The Matadors' lead would be short-lived as the Titans answered back in the 18th minute. Playing the ball on the left side of the field, Hailey Gough would beat her defender and make a drive into the box before sending a cross to Kaytlin Brinkman who finished at the net to tie the match at 1-1.
In the 22nd minute, Arteaga again came within inches of striking the net when she took a free kick. Her shot from near straight away atop of the box banged off the top crossbar.
CSUN's defense would face 10 shots in the first half, but the score remained 1-1 heading into intermission. Mauldin helped keep the Titans off the scoreboard with two first-half saves.
The shot count was nearly even in the second stanza with the Titans holding a narrow 11-10 edge. Mauldin turned back an attempt from Samantha McKenna in the 51st minute while she stopped another in the 63rd minute, this time via a shot from Graci Raymond.
Arteaga had a pair of shots saved from near the top of the box while Cruz missed wide in the 69th minute and put a shot on frame in the 73rd minute.
The deciding goal though would come at the 72:39 mark of the second half. Playing one-on-one against her defender, Raylin Raibon drove up the right wing and sent a shot toward the far post. Mauldin would track the shot attempt and get a hand on the ball, but the ball would still drop into the net for a Titan 2-1 lead.
CSUN looked for the equalizer minutes later when Arteaga took a shot heading to her right from 18 yards, however, Ranson collected a save.
Fullerton would control the clock over the remaining minutes, eventually collecting three shots over the last 11-plus minutes to hold on to a one-goal victory.Â
GAME NOTES
Cruz scored her fourth goal of her career in the match while Cindy Arteaga posted her first assist of the year and fifth overall of her career.
Seven Matador field players played the full 90 minutes on the field, which included Arteaga, Angelica Claiborne, Brooke Mobeck, Kacie Garrity, Gabriela Robles, Ashly Torres and Jackie Victorio.
The Titans outshot the Matadors 21-15 and held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. Fullerton recorded 12 of the 13 corner kicks in the match. A total of 12 fouls were called with CSUN whistled for eight of them. Kacie Garrity was shown the yellow card in the 54th minute.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"I'm disappointed. We outplayed them and had some good opportunities, but we just didn't finish.
"I was excited [to see Cruz score tonight]. Cruz has been out for a couple games and it's nice to have her back. She's getting back into her rhythm."
