COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"We had our chances in all three sets. We do a lot of good things but then we turn around and do some bad things, so it comes down to a consistency issue. If we can become more consistent we're going to win some matches but until that happens we're going to struggle at times."
SET 1
A UCI ace opened up an early 9-3 lead and the Matadors played catch-up the entire set. Still down five at 11-6, CSUN rallied behind a 4-0 run – highlighted by a kill and block by Anderson – to trim the lead to 11-10. Consecutive kills by Nevarez and Hunter pulled the Matadors even at 14-14 but CSUN could not take a lead. UCI led 18-14 before Kills by Nevarez and After Orshoff's kill pulled CSUN back within two at 18-16, UCI used three straight kills to extend its lead back to five at 21-16. Another Orshoff kill kept the margin at four (21-17) before the hosts outscored the Matadors 4-1 down the stretch for the 25-18 win.
SET 2
Consecutive kills by Barron early in the second set gave CSUN its first lead of the night at 3-2. An Orshoff kill kept the Matadors in front 4-3 when UCI used a 9-2 run to open up a 12-6 cushion. The Anteater lead grew to 14-7 forcing a CSUN timeout. The hosts would lead by as many as eight at 15-8 and again at 17-9 when the Matadors would stage a late rally. A Mitchell ace capped a 5-1 run that trimmed the deficit to 18-14. UCI built its lead back to five (21-16) when CSUN again rallied behind an 8-3 run to save four set points. With the set even at 24-24, the hosts would get a kill and a block to close out a 26-24 win.
SET 3
Looking to stay alive in the match, the Matadors surrendered the opening point before scoring five of the next seven to lead 5-3. The hosts would tie the score at 6-6 and again at 7-7 when CSUN answered with a 6-1 run to open up a 13-8 lead which forced an Anteater timeout. UCI answered with 5-1 run to pull within 14-13 before a Nevarez kill ended the run. A Barron kill pushed the Matador lead back to three at 17-14 when UCI again countered with a 4-0 spurt to retake the lead 18-17. An Anteater setting error tied the score before UCI would claim four of the next five points to push the lead to 21-18. Still down by three at 22-19, CSUN used an Anderson kill and an Anteater hitting error to pull within one. Another Anderson kill kept the margin at one (23-22) but UCI would get consecutive kills to end the match.
