Matadors Drop Four-Set Decision at UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Lauryn Anderson and Taylor Orshoff combined for 21 kills but the CSUN women's volleyball team came up empty in its Big West opening road trip as UC San Diego defeated the Matadors in four sets Saturday night at Liontree Arena.
Anderson led CSUN with 11 kills and five blocks while hitting .375 on 24 swings. After hitting a season-high .364 at UC Irvine on Friday, Orshoff had 10 kills on .281 hitting Saturday against the Tritons but Matadors (5-9, 0-2) dropped a 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 25-28 decision.
KEY STATISTICS
• Outside of Anderson and Orshoff, Nicole Nevarez and Carisa Barron each had eight kills with Nevarez adding 17 digs and five blocks. Barron chipped in 22 assists and eight digs in the loss.
• Taylor Hunter and Magdalena Juric chipped in seven kills apiece with Hunter hitting .429 on 14 attacks to go with five digs and three blocks. Emily Sparks notched her third double-double of the season with 19 assists and 11 digs and Breanna Mitchell had a team-high 23 digs.
• UC San Diego out-hit the Matadors by the slim margin of .246 to .242 but had 66 kills to CSUN's 51. The Tritons posted 87 team digs to 71 for the Matadors while CSUN posted an 11.0-8.0 edge in blocks.
• Zaria Henderson led UCSD (8-6, 1-1) with a match-high 17 kills while Ava McInnes (15) and Jazmine Saran (10) also reached double figures..
COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"We play well in stretches then we have stretches where we execute poorly, and tonight was no different. We're reducing our errors but we need to get better on defense and serving, Simply getting better in those two key areas will make a big impact for us moving forward."
SET 1
In a set that featured five ties and a pair of lead changes, a pair of Barron kills followed by an Orshoff gave the Matadors an early 8-4 lead. The CSUN lead was still four at 12-8 when the Tritons engineered a 7-3 run to knot the score at 15-15. A pair of UCSD hitting errors and a Juric kill pushed the Matador lead back to three (18-15) before a 5-2 Tritons run again tied the score. Three kills from McInnes highlighted a 5-0 run for the Tritons that closed a 25-20 win.
SET 2
A solo block from Hunter gave CSUN an early 3-1 lead and a Nevarez ace opened up a 5-3 cushion for the Matadors. Four straight UCSD points erased the CSUN lead and gave the Tritons the lead for good at 7-5. A Henderson kill gave UCSD its largest lead at 19-14 and the Tritons took a two-set lead following the 25-21 win.
SET 3
After hitting .083 in the second set, the Matadors came out on fire in the third frame, ultimately hitting .500 with 19 kills and a single hitting error on 36 attacks. CSUN snapped a 5-5 tie as a kill by Juric was followed by three straight Anderson kills gave the Matadors a 9-5 lead. Another Anderson kill gave CSUN its largest lead at 19-13 and UCSD would only get within five the remainder of the set as the Matadors closed out a 25-17 win.
SET 4
CSUN carried the momentum into the fourth set, scoring five of the first six points. Still leading 6-2, the Matadors surrendered a eight straight points as the Tritons took the lead for good at 10-6. An Anderson kill pulled CSUN back within two at 11-9 but the Matadors would get no closer down the stretch in a 25-18 Triton win.

The Matadors return to Northridge for their 2022 home opener this Friday against CSU Bakersfield. First serve at Premier America Credit Union Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m.
