9/28/2022 9:58:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.— Jamar Ricketts' goal in the 19th minute proved to be the difference as CSUN defeated UC Riverside 1-0 in The Big West men's soccer opener Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field.
Ricketts' third goal of the season was set up by Oscar Cardenas who sent the ball to Ricketts on the left side. The redshirt sophomore went low and to the right of Highlanders' goalie Carlos Gonzalez for the game winner. UC Riverside outshot CSUN 9-1 in the opening frame, but Cooper Wenzel made three saves on the three attempts that were on goal.
UC Riverside outshot CSUN 6-4 in the second half, but only two were on goal. Those attempts came in the 86th minute when Brendan Clark's blast from in front of the Matador goal was kicked away by Wenzel. The rebound came back out to Clark who had a shot blocked by the CSUN defense. With six seconds remaining, Clark put a shot on goal near the Matador net which Wenzel saved and cradled as time expired for the victory.
THE STATS
UC Riverside outshot CSUN 15-5 for the match. Wenzel made five saves. Wednesday was Wenzel's second consecutive shutout on the season and his third of the year. The CSUN defense has not given up a goal in its last 185:23 dating back to the Sept. 21 match against Saint Mary's. UCR posted three corner kicks while the Matadors recorded one. The teams combined for 29 fouls and five yellow cards. UC Riverside drops to 1-6-2 on the year.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"If you look at the scores of the last (few) games against UC Riverside, we are probably tied on aggregate. We are very tightly matched. They are a good team, and we knew it was going to be a 1-0 or 1-1 game and we knew we had to fight for every inch. Every conference opener is tough."
"Oscar gave Jamar a great ball and he finished it (for the goal). Our opponent may shoot, but we do not give up clean looks. Every shot that we give up is contested and that is why goals are not being given up."
NOTES
Wednesday was the sixth time in the past eight meetings dating back to the 2016 season between CSUN and UC Riverside in which the winning team won the match 1-0…one goal has been the winning margin of victory in the series between the two teams since Oct. 31, 2009, when CSUN defeated the Highlanders 4-1, a span of 18 matches…CSUN now leads the all-time series 27-7-8…the Matadors are now 12-5-4 in Big West openers since joining the conference in 2001….the victory was the 210th for Terry Davila at the helm of the CSUN program.
